Air India introduces seat selection fee for most rows

Apr 17, 2018

Air India on Monday introduced seat-selection fee for most rows on domestic and international flights. Earlier, it charged only for the front row seats on long-haul flights.

With this, yet another airline has imposed the middle seat selection fee or “family fee” as it is known in certain countries because parents or a passenger travelling with a kid would be forced to pay it to ensure the child doesn’t end up next to a stranger.

In a circular issued to travel agents, Air India listed the fees on various routes, which starts at Rs 100 for middle seats on domestic flights Rs 200 for the window/aisle seats. On international flights out of India, the fee is Rs 200 on most routes, except on flights to Kathmandu, where it’s Rs 100. The emergency exit row fee is between Rs 800 and Rs 1,500 depending on the route, while the window/aisle seat fee is between Rs 240 and Rs 1,500. On flights from international destinations into India, the seat fees depend on the currency of the airport or origin.

On the US-India routes for instance, the middle seat fee is $3, while that for the emergency row exit seat is $50. For all the other window and aisle seats, it is $15. A couple travelling with a child, say, a JFK/NewYork-Mumbai flight would be forced to shell out $33 to be seated on the same row. If they want to save and yet ensure that at least one parent is seated next to the child, they will have to pay at least $18 and book a window or an aisle seat and the middle seat.

Since when did AI start charging for seat assignments. Except for some exit rows, I was able to select any seat in any row for no charge as recently as last month on a domestic flight. Probably AI express charges for seat assignments.

Does AI make money on a route operated 2X per week? Or is this just a consolidator route for cheap package deals to Asia?

You are right - Wed, Fri, Sun, Mon
My bad. Well good for them if they are adding another flight. When I looked at the flights, I noticed (1) AI was pricing at a premium and (2) there really aren't too many options for AI's flight times since most EU airlines fly to DEL in the am and return in the middle of the night. If I was a tourist, I would pick AI's timings (now their soft product and reputation are well...)

Air India disinvestment: Around 150 queries on carrier's sale

April 25, 2018

Around 150 queries have been received in the Air India privatisation process, made queries and sought clarifications on the terms of the flagship carrier’s sale. These include both foreign and Indian airlines, as well as a number of domestic and external non-aviation entities, Business Standard has learnt.

“The stakeholder consultation has got a good response. Almost 150 queries have been received,” a senior government official said. He said that the queries are mostly about the treatment of debt, employee future and management of the airline. Transaction advisor EY is responding to the queries and will seek clarification from the government regarding any changes in terms of sale.

The response to stakeholder consultation assumes significance as to major Indian airlines IndiGo and Jet Airways ruled out bidding for Air India that the terms of sale are too strict. However, the official said that there was a chance that IndiGo might rethink their decision.

The last date of submitting queries by interested parties was April 16. According to the practice, the transaction advisor responds to the queries on its own or forwards them to the line ministry – in this case, the Civil Aviation Ministry – or the department of investment and public asset management (DIPAM), if need be. EY will respond to the queries by April 30, the formal expressions of interest (EoI) by prospective buyers are to be submitted by May 14, and qualified interested bidders will be informed by the government by May 28.

Regarding the increase in frequency announced by AI. Either they are doing well enough or breaking even and have spare 787's lying around.

On DEL-Amritsar-Birmingham route: Cannot imagine this route is high yielding. Unless there has been a sudden increase in the wealth of the VFR passengers who use this flight, this appears to be at best break even.

This seems more likely as neither of these routes look strategic. Instead of VIE they should have gone for MUC.

Its alright so long as they are able to increase utilization and break even. But, again this adhocism doesn't help.

SO it looks like AI will fly a total of 9 times weekly to BHX. 5X from DEL and and 4X from ATQ (all nonstop). Is that correct? I get why they have the Tues and Thurs flight flying at the same time at the DEL flight (so you essentially get 7X from DEL) but why have the extra 2X BHX-ATQ fly at similar times as BHX-DEL. I guess the night departure from BHX is what VFR want? I would have thought they would do a DEL-SFO and give some variety of times.

Air India Announces Non-Stop Flight Between Amritsar and Bangkok

28th April 2018

Air India on Saturday announced the introduction of a direct flight from Amritsar to Bangkok from May 14, as part of its efforts to increase and augment services on key routes.

Days after announcing increasing the frequency of flights from Delhi to Copenhagen and San Francisco, the airline said the flight from Amritsar to Bangkok would operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

However, the service will remain in effect until May 30 and a decision on its extension will be taken based on the response it gets, an Air India spokesperson said.

“Flight AI 336 will leave Bangkok at 1300 hrs and arrive in Amritsar at 2005 hrs. In return flight AI 337 will leave from Amritsar at 0545 hrs and arrive in Bangkok at 1000hrs,” the airline said in a statement.

Tomorrow will see my first flight on an A321, with seat charges. Only the seats towards the back are free (after the last exit row). Sad
Cheers, Sumantra.

They already operate daily nonstops to LHR from BOM. Are they increasing frequencies or expanding the gauge to a 777?

Jet should move fast and announce their BOM-NBO flight with a 737. AI seems determined to launch it. I would think because Kenyan flies a 737, 9W would have added a 4X or 5X flight awhile ago. Beyond NBO and JNB, I think 9W should leave the rest of Africa to partners.

http://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/air-india-sale-centre-eases-bid-conditions-extends-deadline-to-may-31-118050100825_1.html

Air India sale: Centre eases bid conditions, extends deadline to May 31

May 1, 2018

The civil aviation ministry has extended the deadline for submission of expression of interest (EoI) for Air India by a fortnight to May 31 and has decided to allow shortlisted bidders to change partners in the consortium before submission of final offers.

The revision in bid conditions was announced on Tuesday following requests from prospective suitors. Also, the selected bidder will be allowed to have operational synergies in areas of human resources, operations, sales and procurement, while keeping other businesses at arm’s length.

The government proposes to divest 76 per cent of Air India along with its shareholding in Air India Express and its ground handling subsidiary, AISATS.

Originally, bidders were asked to submit EoI by May 14 and the intimation to qualified bidders was to take place on May 28. Now the deadline has been extended to May 31 and June 15, respectively. While earlier the government allowed no changes in the consortium, now the norm has been eased to allow for one-time changes. A single bidder would be allowed to form a consortium and the existing consortium can rope in new members, while adhering to the bid criteria on net worth and profit. However, there would be no change in the lead member of the consortium and shifting from one consortium to another would not be permitted. The ministry also released 160 queries received from prospective bidders and its response to them. It has clarified that individuals (except Air India employees) will not be eligible to bid for the airline.

The civil aviation ministry said it is a considered decision of the government to retain 24 per cent stake in the airline upon being asked if it would settle for a payout from the selected bidder in lieu of divesting 100 per cent stake. “The government will have rights similar to that of a minority investor as per the Companies Act and shareholders’ agreement,” the ministry said in its response. A source close to the transaction said there is no condition for the selected bidder to undertake an initial public offering within three years of the deal.

The ministry has also said it will disclose at the time of request for proposal (RFP) whether a call and put option will be provided in the share-sale agreement. A put option gives existing shareholders the right to sell securities at a specified price, thereby providing an exit route from the company. A call option allows the buyer to acquire shares at a predetermined price.

“The government has not relaxed conditions with respect to its own ownership and debt to be retained by the new owner. These have been among the main concerns of prospective bidders and should have been addressed before the issue of RFP,” said an aviation source.

While domestic airlines, IndiGo and Jet Airways, have decided not to bid for Air India, the sale process is attracting investment of a few foreign airlines, private equity firms like Warburg Pincus, sovereign wealth funds, and World Bank’s private investment arm, International Finance Corporation

Air India likely to launch Mumbai-Frankfurt flight from June

May 09, 2018

Air India is likely to start a direct flight from Mumbai to Frankfurt from June as it seeks to expand its operations to Europe, official sources said.

According to the official sources, the airline would operate thrice a week from the metropolis and depart for Frankfurt in the morning hours. "We are finalising the slots, and once we are done with it we will make a formal announcement," they said.

The airline currently operates a regular flight on the Delhi-Frankfurt route.

"The new service from Mumbai has been in demand for long, and hopefully we can start it by mid June or towards the end of the month," sources added.
