So, VT-ALX would be the third bird. With VT-ALV delivered, the one parked in the background would be VT-ALW.

Yes, though ALV & ALW have both been delivered now, for VIP duties.
ALX is to be the last of the "civil" 77Ws.

I stand corrected, it seems.

Air India in summer 2018 season is expanding Delhi – San Francisco route, currently served 6 times a week.
From 25MAR18, overall service will increase to 9 weekly, on board Boeing 777-200LR aircraft.

AI173 DEL0400 – 0700SFO 77L x2
AI183 DEL1800 – 2030SFO 77L 257

AI184 SFO0100 – 0600+1DEL 77L 136

I have to say, I think this schedule actually makes a lot of sense given how people travel to India. Nice options. Leaving SFO you get a late (but not crazy late) departure on Sunday night/Mon morning and Friday night/Sat morning. I wish they would just redo their 77L with a new business class and a thorough cleaning.

Five out of the eight were sold to EY.

Three are left with AI - VT-ALF, ALG and ALH.

‘Mystery plane’ in Nagpur skies turns out to be Air India training aircraft

Feb 22nd, 2018

A large plane circling in the skies of Nagpur on Wednesday evening generated much curiosity among the citizens as the plane, which appeared like an international flight did many rounds, hovering over Nagpur. While the phones of various media houses kept ringing the social media too was abuzz about this plane, later it turned out be an Air India aircraft deployed to train pilots for landing and take offs.

The plane was seen circling over various localities since noon. Nagpur was chosen for the exercise because of the less air traffic at the airport here.

However, since Nagpur airport is not that busy, rarely do planes hover around before landing. So, a plane circling over the city was a new sight for most people living near the airport. Soon messages and pictures of the aircraft were spreading across social media.

Airport sources confirmed that it was a training session, and another such session was also held over a week ago. This is a regular affair and centres are chosen on the basis of availability of air space, said a source.

The plane was flown at a height of 3,000 feet during training. Normally, an aircraft can go up to more than 30,000 feet. Though much higher than buildings or other objects, at 3,000 feet the plane appears to be rather low, said an airport official.

Air India invites bids for iPads

2018-02-26

Air India has invited bids for 150 iPads to replace defective video screens on some of its planes. The tender is for new tablets for 18 aircraft in Air India's fleet and is for the period of one year.

The bid document seeks to lease new iPads (Pro 10.5 ) with preloaded content by using the current IFE (in-flight entertainment) content for service recovery on board its aircraft."

An airline official said on the condition of anonymity that these iPads are a backup option and will be provided to passengers in premium classes whose IFE screens are unserviceable. He added that these tablets would be used for Air India s Boeing 777 planes.

Air India CMD Pradeep Kharola had said in a media interaction last month that in order to woo premium travellers and improve its seat occupancy in business class, the airline would look at offering them better services.

"In our long haul flights business class can be a money spinner for Air India. Our passenger load factor is only 50 per cent on these flights. We will try to see how to increase that, perhaps offer better quality of services. If our in-flight entertainment is not doing well, then we are thinking of alternatives. Laptops to business class passengers is a possibility," Kharola had said.

He added that nearly half of the seats in business class go vacant on international flights.

As per the tender document, the bidder will have to provide a set of high quality compatible headsets, customised case cum stand and a replaceable battery with each iPad. It will also have to provide docking stations for charging these iPads at Air India premises in Delhi & Mumbai.

The bidder must be in the business of providing portable hardware solution for in-flight entertainment, have at least two airlines as its customers and an annual financial turnover of $2 million during last two financial years. It should also be registered with Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX).

https://www.timesofisrael.com/el-al-seeking-to-fly-over-saudi-arabia-to-india-report/

El Al seeking to fly over Saudi Arabia to India — report

Israel’s largest airline has reportedly appealed to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), requesting the body’s help in obtaining permission to access Saudi Arabia’s airspace for a direct flight to India This would mark a significant change of policy for the Arab state, which has never recognized Israel.

El Al newly appointed CEO Gonen Usishkin wrote a letter to Alexandre de Juniac, head of the trade association consisting of 278 airlines from 117 countries, asking to not be “discriminated” against compared with Indian airline Air India, Reuters reported Thursday.

It came in response to reports last month that Saudi Arabia had okayed the use of its airspace for Air India flights between Israel and India, reports that were quickly denied by Saudi officials. However, the El Al chief said slot information from the Israel Airports Authority indicated those flight are slated to begin on March 6.

The approval of the use of Saudi airspace for either Air India or El Al, which would cut hours off the flight route between the two countries, would be a first and mark a major milestone in Israel’s attempts to deepen ties with Gulf Sunni states.

“I am approaching you and kindly requesting IATA to intervene and to represent aviation industry’s interest by advocating equal overfly rights for all carriers over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and opposing any form of discrimination,” Usishkin wrote in the letter, sent on Wednesday, according to the report.

Usishkin asked Juniac to intervene and prevent “an uneven playing field,” the report added. He also wrote that he had appealed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for help in resolving the issue.

El Al is currently the only airline offering direct flights from Israel to India, with a Tel Aviv-Mumbai route. However, in order to avoid Saudi Arabia, which has until now forbidden flights to and from Israel over its airspace, the plane must detour over the Red Sea and around the Arabian peninsula, adding over two hours to the flight.

El Al hasn’t received a response to the letter, Reuters said.

The report comes as Israel has tried to build ties with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states allied with the US, which have a common enemy in Iran. However, Riyadh has remained skittish about openly admitting to contacts with Israel.

The direct flight proposal was a main topic on the agenda during Netanyahu’s visit to India in January. Speaking at an economic forum in Mumbai, Netanyahu said the goal was for a “efficient and direct route” to be established between the countries.

Why can't the Israelis just let India get the approval THEN ask for themselves. I hate that they made this about them as well as impying if Saudi gave approval to AI it was because of the Israelis

Saudi Allows Air India To Operate Flights Between India And Israel Over Saudi Airspace

March 08, 2018

Air India has been allowed to operate flights between New Delhi and Tel Aviv over Saudi Arabian airspace, the national airline's spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday, ending a 70-year ban and marking a dramatic diplomatic shift.

Saudi Arabia does not recognise Israel and lifting the airspace ban would reflect what appears to be thawing ties between Israel and the kingdom, both U.S. allies with a shared concern over Iranian influence in the region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Saudi Arabia had granted Air India permission to fly over its territory on its new routes to and from Tel Aviv, but there was no confirmation from either Saudi Arabia or Air India.

Air India plans to operate flights three days a week, and the flight would save two hours of travel time as a result of flying over the Saudi airspace, an Air India spokesman said.

Air India sell-off to begin with airline arm, other three units to follow suit

Mar 7, 2018

The process of Air India’s (AI) sell-off is likely to begin with the airline arm first being put on the block. AI is to be split into four parts — AI-AI Express-AI SATS; ground handling unit; engineering units and Alliance Air — and be offered for sale individually.

“The bid documents for the main airline arm will be out in a couple of weeks. The document for AI’s other arms will come subsequently. That is our plan,” said a senior official. Being the most visible and complex aspect of this sale, authorities are keen to begin the process of divesting in the airline arm so that the transaction may be completed in the remaining term of this government. AI’s debt, which could be as high as Rs 70,000 crore, will be spread over the four entities and an SPV that will remain with the government.

IndiGo has given a formal expression of interest for the airline arm in terms of “international operations of AI and AI Express” or “alternatively all of the airline operations of AI and AI Express”. Tata Sons-Singapore Airlines (SIA) JV Vistara also has an open mind for AI “if it makes business sense”. SIA is reportedly very keen on AI.

Another foreign player has approached the government to buy 49% in AI. “The foreign company which has approached us is not a known airline and it is not known if it is behind a known airline. It wants 49% stake in AI’s airline arm as per Indian rules and we are not sure if it wants its name to be made public yet,” said a highly placed source.

So flight time is 7:25 min. Looks like they are still not on a totally direct route. El AL flies BOM-TLV in 7:35 (I know BOM is closer but they do all the extra flying) and TK flies DEL-IST in 6:45. Saudi flies Del-JED in only 5:35 (which is probably the best comp). Anyone remember the flight block time when RJ flew DEL-AMM? RJ does AMM-BKK in 8:20. Maybe AI will adjust down the flight times once they get used to a safe routing?

Found this stuff. It has old AI boarding cards, some of which show the seating configurations. The L-749 and L-1049 configurations are interesting . I haven't seen them anytime before.

See and enjoy

This seems to the third of the last three. Is this too for VVIP duties or regular operations?

Is this too for VVIP duties or regular operations?

No, for regular AI operations. Only the previous two (VT-ALV "Punjab" & VT-ALW "Rajasthan") are slated to be dedicated VVIP transport.

Jet Airways-Air France-KLM said to be bidding for Air India

Mar 11, 2018

A strong buzz in the market has it that Jet Airways, its European carrier combine partners Air France-KLM and its American partner carrier Delta Air Lines are bidding for national carrier Air India which has been put on the block by the government.

Three executives at Jet Airways said they couldn't comment. An email sent to Jet didn’t elicit any comment before the story went to press.

Isn't there a rule that foreign carriers can only acquire a maximum of 49% in an Indian carrier?

I hope an India-based entity gets to acquire real control of the board by acquiring 51%. Only then can the necessary changes in the running of the airline be made.

Govt To Divest 76% Stake In Air India, Air India Express

March 28, 2018

The government has decided to retain a 24 per cent stake in Air India and Air India Express, as part of its divestment in the state-owned airline. The government is also proposing divesting 50 per cent of its stake in Air India Sats Airport Services. The divestment is to be carried out through an open competitive bidding process.

The divestment process is expected to get under way in the next few days when the global invitation for Expression of Interest (EoI) is uploaded on the government’s websites. A clearer picture of the broad guidelines will emerge once this is done.

The government is proposing a strategic divestment of the airline by transferring management control and sale of 76 per cent of its equity share capital in Air India. Ernst and Young is the transaction advisor to the government on the divestment process.

Alliance Air, an arm of Air India, has launched operations with the fuel efficient turboprop aircraft that is often used in short-haul routes.

IndiGo opts out of race to buy Air India

Apr 06, 2018

IndiGo, the first airline to express interest in acquiring debt-laden Air India, has opted out, saying it was interested only in the state-owned carrier’s international operations and does not have capability to turn around all of its domestic business.

“From day one, IndiGo has expressed its interest primarily in the acquisition of Air India’s international operations and Air India Express. However, that option is not available under the government’s current divestiture plans for Air India,” Aditya Ghosh, president, said in a statement on Thursday. “As we have communicated before, we do not believe we have capability to take on the task of acquiring and successfully turning around all of Air India’s airline operations.”

Air India looks to renew flying permit

Air India has approached aviation regulator DGCA for renewal of its flying permit, expiring in June, amid the government scouting for potential buyer for the loss-making carrier, sources said.

A senior official at the disinvestment-bound national carrier said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already renewed the Scheduled Operator Permit (SOP) of Air India's international budget arm Air India Express recently.

"In the case of Air India, it has applied to the DGCA for renewal of its flying permit and the documents pertaining to renewal are being processed,"the official told PTI.

The DGCA has already renewed the SOP of Air India Express, he added.

As per the DGCA, Air India's flying permit is valid till June this year, while Air India Express SOP was to expire on 21st of this month.

Air India to be listed on bourses within three years of Govt selling majority stake

April 6

The government hopes that Air India will be listed on the stock exchange within three years after it exits from owning a majority stake in the airline.

A senior government official told BusinessLine the three-year time frame for listing will be spelt out in the documents which will be provided to entities who qualify to put in financial bids for Air India.

“Details of how employees are to be looked after, how long they need to be retained, how long the Air India brand name is to be retained and other details will be spelt out in the documents which will be provided to those whom the government shortlists for putting in financial bids for Air India,” the official said. Industry watchers say that issues connected with Air India’s workforce need clarity as the salaries of employees, how long the new owner will have to keep them and their perks and benefits which the new owner will have to bear will have an impact on the valuation that any interested party makes for the state-owned airline. On the issue of IndiGo deciding not go ahead with its bid for Air India, the official said the airline’s announcement had not come as a surprise to the government. “Its bid was not a serious one,” said a senior government official in response to a question on how the government is viewing the development.

Switzerland’s SAC shows interest in bidding for state-run Air India

Apr 08, 2018

Switzerland-based Swiss Aviation Consulting (SAC) has shown interest in bidding for Air India, which has been put on the block by the government. A senior aviation ministry official told ET that this is the first international aviation group to evince interest in the national carrier.

But industry experts said the move does not look “serious” and the Swiss company may only be scouting for its clients. “Swiss Aviation Consulting, over a couple of months ago, had expressed interest in bidding for Air India,” the aviation ministry official said, requesting anonymity.

An email to the company sent on Friday evening did not elicit any response till press time Sunday. Established in 2005, SAC is a provider of full aviation services. It serves private owners, financial institutions and airline communities.

Air India to resume its Delhi-Durgapur direct flight from tomorrow

April 14, 2018

Air India is set to resume its direct flight linking industrial town of Durgapur in West Bengal with Delhi from tomorrow after a gap of nearly 22 months, AI sources said here today.

The flight AI-756, to be operated with a 122-seater Airbus A319 aircraft, will leave Durgapur at 0825 hoursrs and arrive at Delhi at 1035 hours.

The flight will originate from Delhi at 0550 hours and land at Durgapur at 0750 hours.

The airline is offering attractive fares for this flight, which will operate four days a week, both ways.

AI was the first airline to start operation from Durgapur in May 2015 but it withdrew the flight on June 17, 2016 citing ‘operational reasons’, the sources said.

At that time, the flight used to operate between Kolkata and Delhi via Durgapur.

The flight both ways are full tomorrow, the AI sources added.
