Why the choice of MAN? I believe it is the same person posting this news here and at A.net. Time will tell.

MAN has likely to have been chosen as it’s a huge, unserved market and MAN are offering good incentives to get the route, and Mumbai, served.

The source is good too, and I notice on social media, Spicejet is hardly denying the news, instead even thanking someone for wishing good luck.

If it is MAN then a huge fail for Jet/VS. They should at least launch MAN-BOM asap. VS is very strong in MAN (FF wise) and 9W in BOM. The unfortuante thing is neither 9W or VS can afford a loss making route. Delta is booming in the US and could support a marginal route (rightly, MAN-BOM is not DL's priority). That said I am glad 9W launched that third flight LHR-BOM. Very convenient timings IMHO.

SpiceJet mulls own seaplane production

SpiceJet is mulling establishing a seaplane manufacturing plant in the Indian state of West Bengal in order to produce aircraft which would then be deployed on thinner domestic routes, The Times of India has reported.

"We would like to fly these seaplanes in the state to boost tourism as well to explore the possibility of manufacturing them in the state," company's chairman Ajay Singh said during the Bengal Global Business Summit 2018 earlier this week.

In mid-December, the airline concluded a six-month trial period of its Quest Kodiak seaplane operations. Singh told reporters at that time that SpiceJet intends to launch scheduled services to underserved regions in India within twelve months using such aircraft.

The tests have been conducted in cooperation with Setouchi Holdings, a Japanese company which since 2015 has owned Quest Aircraft (Sandpoint). In October 2017, the carrier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Setouchi regarding the purchase of at least a hundred Kodiaks. The potential value of the deal exceeds USD400 million.

It is not clear whether SpiceJet is mulling manufacturing a new type of seaplanes in India or rather is aiming to establish a Quest assembly plant.

The airline will also enhance its operations on the Chennai-Vishakhapatnam (second frequency), Kolkata-Vishakhapatnam (second frequency), Chennai-Vijayawada (third frequency) and Bengaluru-Chennai (fifth frequency) routes with non-stop additional frequencies. While the airline will operate daily flights between Chennai and Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam and Chennai and Vijayawada, services between Bengaluru and Chennai will be operational on all days except Tuesdays.

SpiceJet, which is the largest regional player in the country, will serve on all the routes with its Bombardier Q400 aircraft except for the Chennai - Guwahati route where it will deploy its Boeing 737 aircraft.

SpiceJet mulls seaplanes on Brahmaputra

Feb 3, 2018

SpiceJet on Saturday said it is exploring possibilities to introduce seaplanes on Brahmaputra in Assam, making the river the largest waterways in the world.

"We are exploring possibilities for introducing seaplanes in Assam. With the seaplanes, Brahmaputra can be the largest waterway in the world," SpiceJet chairman and managing director Ajay Singh said at the inaugural function of the Global Investors Summit 2018 here.

On the air network, the Singh said "We propose to connect Assam to Thailand, Myanmar and other ASEAN countries. This will surely help the region grow economically."

Hello.

Perhaps of interest.

SpiceJet first 737-8 Max is allocated to LN 7103. Still quite a way out yet - probably towards late Q3 or Q4 this year. Note: closer to the time you may see other sources showing as frame as allocated to Royal Jet - please ignore if that happens.

From official source.

It is far from the first seaplane service Bombay has seen. The Indian Navy used to operate Shorts Sealand seaplanes in the 1950s and they were a common sight in Bombay.

Shocking that so-called aviation journalists know so little about Indian aviaition history.

I think at that time there was a lot of brouhaha about the dictator in the PM's chair flying around Gandaland in a seaplane. While the media was having a collective orgasm about his bravado, they probably spiced (no pun intended on Spicejet) up the story with false facts, to make him look (even more) like a demi-God, having brought sea planes to India too.

The seaplane niche is also being explored by SpiceJet which has indicated its interest in establishing a seaplane manufacturing plant in the Indian state of West Bengal. It, too, is a keen participant in the RCS scheme and, aside from operating the routes awarded to it during the initial round of allocations last year, plans to commence service on those it was awarded during round two in January, in April this year.

SpiceJet to diversify into freighter service with modified Boeing 737

June 30, 2018

SpiceJet is diversifying into the air cargo business, and will be the first among Indian airlines to start a dedicated freighter plane service. The airline, which will be using Boeing 737-800 BCF for freighter operations, will get its first plane in July.

“We plan to start operations by July between the metro cities. Gradually we will be spreading the business to other cities including international destinations,” a senior SpiceJet official said.

Sources said that retrofitting work in aircraft is underway at Boeing’s facilities in Shanghai and at Israel Aerospace Industries. “Two planes have already undergone conversion and will be joining our fleet by third week of July,” the Spicejet official said. The airline plans to have 20 freighter planes by 2022.

Through its freighter conversion program, US aeronautical aircraft Boeing transitions passenger airplanes into freighters. “The seats of the plane are removed creating space for cargo. Modifications also include installing a large main-deck cargo door, a cargo-handling system and accommodations for up to four non-flying crew members or passengers.

The 737-800BCF carries load of upto up to 23 tonnes and has a range of 2,000 nautical miles (3,750 km) which according to SpiceJet will help them to venture in new international markets. “The international destinations are still in planning stage but certainly we will expand gradually,” the official said.

The 737-800BCF freighter also offers operators newer technology, lower fuel consumption and better reliability than other standard-body freighters.

SpiceJet Sets Sights On More International Routes To Keep Fleet Busy

JULY 9, 2018

As SpiceJet firms up plans to induct new Boeing aircraft, the Gurugram-based airline is eyeing more international routes to keep its expanding fleet busy.

The airline has sought permission from the aviation ministry for more rights to fly to Dhaka from Indian cities, as well as operate flights on other key routes where it hopes to begin service in the coming months. In a letter to the aviation ministry, the airline said it plans to operate flights to Dhaka from Chennai and Delhi with the addition of the new Boeing 737 Max. Delivery of the airplane will start in August.

The airline also said it will upgrade its Kolkata-Dhaka flight from a 78-seat Bombardier Q400s to a 186-seat Boeing 737. “They have asked us to look at increasing India’s bilateral flying entitlements if the current quota does not have enough for them to add flights.

Not just Bangladesh, they have plans for other international destinations too,” said an aviation ministry official, who did not want to be named.

SpiceJet to launch freighter service; daily service soon from Guwahati to Hong Kong

Aug 08, 2018

SpiceJet is all set to expand its cargo business and will soon start freighter service both for domestic and international destinations. SpiceJet will officially launch the freighter service later this month in Delhi. It will be the first Indian carrier to launch freighters ex Guwahati in Assam to Hong Kong on a daily basis, thus providing a new export outlet for goods from the North Eastern Region of India.

Manjiv Singh, Chief Project Officer for SpiceJet, confirmed this during the one-day workshop on air cargo development in India's North East Region last week in Guwahati. Singh is responsible for the cargo division and SpiceJet has been investing considerable amount of funds into building its freighter fleet to launch services both internationally and domestically from and within India. SpiceJet will soon have in its fleet the first B737-800F. Aircraft joining the freighter fleet are Boeing Converted Freighters (BCF) and they are built at Boeing's facility in Shanghai and at Bedek Aviation, the Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) passenger to cargo conversion division.

It is said that SpiceJet plans to operate a total of twenty freighters by 2022.

SpiceJet becomes first budget carrier to launch IFE system

Aug 13, 2018

SpiceJet today became the first local low-cost carrier to launch a complimentary in-flight entertainment (IFE) system across its international and domestic flights which can be accessed by passengers through their mobile phones and tablets.

Until now, IFE services were being offered only by full-service carriers, including Air India and Jet Airways, through IFE LCD screens.

"The launch of our new in-flight entertainment system, SpicEngage, will vastly improve the on board experience of our flyers. Passengers can now use their own phones and tablets on board SpiceJet to watch their favourite shows, play games, read and do much more," said Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director, SpiceJet.

Unlike traditional in-flight entertainment systems, flyers can easily access SpicEngage on their hand-held devices by following a few easy steps, the airline said.

SpicEngage will host a plethora of content broadly classified under five categories watch, play, explore, read and eat, it said.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/70154-indias-spicejet-again-defers-longhaul-plans

India's SpiceJet again defers longhaul plans

SpiceJet has once more deferred long-awaited longhaul expansion plans on the back of a weakening Indian rupee and rising oil prices.

“We expect to fly to many more countries in the future. (But) we will do long-haul international destinations only when it is commercially feasible,” airline chairman Ajay Singh told Livemint in an interview this week.

According to Singh, while longhaul flights will "eventually happen", their actual launch will depend on “a somewhat improved environment in terms of ATF (aviation turbine fuel) and taxation”.

Last year, Singh intimated that SpiceJet would look to Eastern European and Turkish destinations, rather than Western Europe as potential options for its longhaul debut.

In terms of fleeting, the Indian LCC has already begun widebody fleet acquisition studies with the A350-1000 from Airbus and the B787-10 from Boeing among top contenders. SpiceJet also has the option of upgauging some of its 205 B737 MAX order slots to widebody aircraft.

https://www.livemint.com/Companies/MdSRE8Tt8hjZCAHumy2ARM/SpiceJet-to-test-Indias-first-biofuelpowered-plane-today.html

In a first in India, SpiceJet operates biofuel flight

Aug 27 2018

SpiceJet today successfully operated “India’s first ever biojet fuel flight”. A Bombardier Q400 aircraft, partially using biojet fuel, took off from Dehradun and landed at the airport in the national capital. The SpiceJet flight was powered with a blend of 75% air turbine fuel (ATF) and 25% biojet fuel, it said. SpiceJet in a statement said the advantage of using biojet fuel as compared to ATF is that it reduces carbon emissions and enhances fuel efficiency. Made from Jatropha crop, the fuel has been developed by the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun, SpiceJet said.

Around 20 people, including officials from aviation regulator DGCA and SpiceJet, were in the test flight. The duration of the flight was around 25 minutes, according to an airline executive.

SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said biojet fuel is low cost and helps in significantly reducing carbon emissions.

“It has the potential to reduce our dependence on traditional aviation fuel by up to 50% on every flight and bring down fares,” he said.

The biojet fuel has been recognised by American Standard Testing Method (ASTM) and meets the specification standards of Pratt & Whitney and Bombardier for commercial application in aircraft.

A SpiceJet executive said the airline would provide end-to-end solutions to companies that use its freighter service.

“We will provide solutions that will include picking up products from one warehouse and delivering it to the other warehouse solutions companies through our freighters. There is a huge market in India that is yet to be tapped,” he said.

SpiceJet’s first freighter aircraft is already in India, he said. It will launch the operation next week.

Slots for freighter aircraft would not be a problem even at busy airports, the executive said, adding: “If there is a requirement, the airline would provide a current passenger aircraft slot, as freighter operations would be a high-yield business.”

Any idea which aircraft? Registration? Photos?

SpiceJet announces dedicated freighter service on domestic, international routes

Sep 11, 2018

SpiceXpress, the first dedicated air cargo service of SpiceJet, the launch of which was announced on Monday, will launch operations on September 18 and cover air cargo operations from Delhi, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Hong Kong, Kabul and Amritsar in the first phase, senior SpiceJet officials have said.

The low-cost airline inducted its first freighter aircraft at a ceremony held in the Delhi airport.

Officials said that SpiceJet will operate the cargo services under the brand name SpiceXpress and has laid down a detailed plan covering both domestic and international routes. The freighters fleet will consist of Boeing 737 planes and will be operated on an incremental direct operating cost model and extending its operations through its common pool of resources like pilots, engineers, ground staff, airport infrastructure. The first freighter aircraft to be inducted by SpiceJet is a Boeing 737-700. The airline plans to have an air cargo fleet with the first four freighters scheduled to be inducted in 2019.

“I am delighted to announce the launch of our dedicated air cargo operations and induction of our first freighter aircraft. We are very excited about the tremendous potential the logistics industry offers. There is a huge untapped market for air cargo services in India and a player like SpiceJet is best suited to address this need,” said Ajay Singh – Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet.

Spicejet relaunches a revamped SpiceClub loyalty program

Indian low cost carrier Spicejet has relaunched its loyalty program SpiceClub. The revision replaces its prepaid loyalty program launched in 2016 and now makes it free for registration. SpiceClub offers upgrades, complimentary meals, discounts and exclusive deals. The airline website claims that the new structure is live effective 17th August but the airline has not started active marketing around this program yet.

The airline allows collection of points (miles) every time you fly Spicejet. The airline also allows you to earn these points for purchase of meals, excess baggage and possibly everything that is part of ancillary services on offer. These points can be redeemed for free flights.

The loyalty program is tier based akin to that of full service carriers and has four tiers – Classic, Silver, Gold and Platinum. A flier can register for free and joins the Classic tier. A flier upgrades to Silver after 5 flight bookings, to Gold after 15 flight bookings as Silver member and 30 flight bookings as Gold member would upgrade a flier to Platinum. The spend benefits start at 2 points per 100 rupees as Classic member and goes up to 8 points per 100 rupees spent for Platinum.

SpiceJet adds first extra capacity 90-seat Q400

24.09.2018

SpiceJet (SG, Delhi Int'l) has taken delivery of its first 90-seat Dash 8-400, becoming the first operator of the extra-capacity version of the Bombardier turboprop.

"The additional seats and performance improvements will result in substantial reduction in unit costs and also we will enable us to address our market needs in the regional space," SpiceJet's Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said.

The aircraft, VT-SQA (msn 4583) left Toronto Downsview on September 21 on delivery to India via Goose Bay, Reykjavik Keflavik, Bournemouth, Bucharest Otopeni, Trabzon, and Al Fujairah.

The Indian low-cost carrier already operates twenty-two Q400s. All of SpiceJet's current Q400 aircraft are equipped with 78 seats. It deploys the aircraft to 38 destinations across India as well as to Colombo Int'l, Dhaka, and Malé with Hyderabad Int'l, Chennai and Bangalore Int'l being the three most important bases for its turboprop operations.

Air Philippines (2P, Manila Ninoy Aquino Int'l) and Nok Air (DD, Bangkok Don Mueang) currently already operate 86-seat versions of the Q400.

This is very good start for Spicejet to distinguish itself from Indigo or Air Asia. In India passengers do not seem to value frequent flyer points much, witness Indigo's growth. This may be the turning point.

Also Spice Jet is starting services from Mumbai to Jaiselmer (and Kanpur as announced previously) from October. I received an email from them.

I am fine with the tight legroom as most Indians want cheap flights. That said, I wish they would offer 3 or 4 rows of extra legroom seats for purchase. Then everyone wins.

SpiceJet in talks to buy A330neo

Sep 26, 2018

SpiceJet is in talks with Airbus to buy its A330neo wide bodied planes, said two people in the know, indicating that the airline is firming up plans to fly long haul international routes such as Europe.

Earlier this month, a team of six top executives at the European plane-maker flew down from its headquarters in Toulouse, France to meet the senior management of SpiceJet, led by chairman Ajay Singh, at its office in Gurugram, near Delhi.
This was the second of such meetings in as many months, said one of the people cited above who didn’t want to be named.

Neither SpiceJet nor Airbus could be reached for comment. The people cited above didn’t specify the number of planes being considered by SpiceJet.
