Maharashtra govt again renames airport & CST, adds ‘Maharaj’

Dec 9, 2016

The state cabinet on Thursday decided to rename the city airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in order to add the honorific 'Maharaj' to the name. So the new names will now be Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

A legislator who did not wish to be named said the renaming seemed to have been done to woo the Maratha community, particularly in view of Maratha morchas across the state to demand reservations.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the demand to add 'Maharaj' to the names was an old one. Vinayak Mete of the Shiv Sangram Party had first raised the issue last year.

who supports the BJP-led state government, had raised the issue in the legislative council during last year's winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur. He had then said the names of the airport and CST referred to the great Maratha warrior in "singular terms".

The proposal will now be sent to the Union government for its approval.

Girish Bapat, food and civil supplies minister, said the change had been made in honour of the Maratha hero who was a king.

Another legislator said the name change would cost the aviation industry and the railway authorities a lot as they would have to replace signboards, tickets and other stuff. He, however, said the state move was a good one.

The Union government had renamed Victoria Terminus as CST in 1996, months after Bombay was renamed as Mumbai. The Sahar airport was renamed in 1999, and a year later, the Prince of Wales Museum was named the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

Reacting to the renaming, an airport source, requesting anonymity, said, "For now, it's not known how long it would take and how much it would cost to bring about the airport name change. To begin with, airlines will be informed to change the airport name on tickets. The airport website is www.csia.in, the domain name will need to be changed."

Other than the obvious changes like the ones that need to be made on signages and boards, the airport operator will need to send a note to all the international agencies, companies and airlines it deals with informing them about the change. "It's not the first time the city airport's name has been changed. I don't think any other major international airport has had such name changes," an official said.

"Then again, legal opinion will be sought and requisite action taken with regard to all agreements the airport has entered into with other parties under the current name," said another official. Among the other administrative changes would be those in the official letterhead, visiting cards, etc.

Excellent move. Everyone has to know that Chattrapati Shivaji was a 'Maharaj', and not some two bit village vassal. How important is that!

Seems the present day two bit thugs of the warlord aren't done yet with their renaming agenda. While that is a separate issue (and I could talk till the cows come home on that, 'cause I got nothing but hate for that lot) what would be interesting is if they rename Santa Cruz (the area - or rather the former Portuguese Aldea...a terrible thought for me given I was born and raised there, but still very possible apparently). The airport is still technically, geographically, and historically in Santa Cruz (at least the last time I checked). So if Santa Cruz changes to, let's just say Shivajistan, would the punks re-re-rename the airport, to add to the "glory" of you-know-who ?!!!

I don't think they will change any of the old Portugese names of localities. The Catholic vote bank is too strong.

Didn't singer Jagjit Singh's wife want the road in front of her house to be named after him, only to have the Catholics up in arms? The issue was quietly buried afterwards.

Hope you're right. Apparently a few days ago they officially changed the name of Elphinstone Road (train station), and are changing the names of Grant Road (train station), Charni Road (train station), & Dadar (train station) next. So who knows !

And yes, Jagjit Singh's wife (Chitra Singh) actually wanted to rename Perry Cross Road in Bandra after him...she had already gotten away renaming Sophia College Lane as "Vivek Singh Road", after her son who was killed in an car wreck. This is an interesting article about that fiasco, from back in 2012
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/music/news/Jagjit-Singhs-wife-locks-horns-with-Bandra-residents/articleshow/16320801.cms

Things have gotten worse since then - not sure if the "powers that be" even consider the Catholic vote bank to be important. Sad part is that it is killing off a lot of heritage & history to appease the self proclaimed 'sons of the soil' (more like "Gundas of Mumbai")

As for the airport, as my old man and most fellow aviators of his generation who flew in and out of it for the IAF and/or Air India for decades opined, if the airport *had* to be renamed, it ought to have been renamed after J.R.D. Tata.

Shocking!
Even if I can force myself to understand Elphinstone Road and Grant Road, why Charni Road and Dadar, which are Indian names?

And apparently Grant Road is going to be renamed 'August Kranthi' Rolling Eyes What an apt name for Mumbai's biggest red light area!

And I agree about the airport. JRD's is the only name that deserves to be on it.

I wish our foolish leaders learned from Fidel Castro. Apparently the man's last wish was that no road, airport or any other public facility should be named after him. So much for a man who ruled Cuba for 50+ years!

My God ! The day I suggested that, I was declared as a blasphemer and nearly burnt at the stake, by a "son of the soil" on this forum ..... as I was told by some, "we worship him a GOD !!"....they didn't like my theory that 'you-know-who' was a small time regional warlord, in the larger scheme of things, and definitely unrelated to having an airport named after him. Anyway, I guess to each his own, and that's fine, I can respect that. I wish they could too.

But as to why Bombay airport was not renamed the first time around to include "said appropriate honorific title" by the people who apparently have PhDs in (his) history, baffles me ! Did they wake up in 2016 and realize that they have been honoring him inappropriately all this time?
Jesus Christ ! - Oh, sorry ! Rolling Eyes

So, if the airport terminal is named after Maharaj Chatrapati Shivaji, etc etc etc., I'm guessing the loos in the airport are also covered by this honorific.

Next time I'll make sure to eat the hottest fish curry available in Mahim before I arrive at said temple to the great one, so I can appropriately avail of the services in his great name.

Mumbai airport renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport

August 30, 2018

Nearly two years after a resolution was passed in the Maharashtra Assembly, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has finally been rechristened as Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. Confirming the development, Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday said the long-pending demand of the state had been fulfilled.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is now Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport. Congratulations to the people of Maharashtra, the long pending demand is now fulfilled. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for the concern towards the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra,” Prabhu tweeted.

The Maharashtra government on December 8 decided to insert the word ‘Maharaj’ to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus as it felt the Maratha warrior king deserved to be paid more respect. A proposal was passed in the Assembly and forwarded to the Centre in December 2016.

While the change was immediately made by the then Railway Minister, the change in airport name had been pending. The request to add the word ‘Maharaj’ was made by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MP Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati, who is also the 13th descendant of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Mumbai’s airport was formerly known as Sahar International Airport. It was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in 1999. The airport’s renaming will mean that airport authorities will have to make a lot of changes, from informing the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to changing all the boards on the airport premises. The civic authorities will also have to change the signage on the city roads that lead to the international airport.
