Vistara to reconfigure new and existing aircraft
News
25-Jan-2016 12:27 PM
Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said the carrier plans to reconfigure its aircraft, stating: "There will be a cabin reconfiguration not only in the new aircraft but also in our existing fleet. We have learnt over the last one year of operation that the business class seats did not take off the way we expected. Because of the Route Dispersal Guidelines (RDG) we have to fly in some non-profitable routes. So, we will reduce the premium category seats. We have shown that we can sell economy class seats better than other airlines. We have grown our market share from 0.2 percent to 2 percent in one year. Very soon, our load factor in economy class will exceed the market average" (Business Standard, 24-Jan-2016).

Vistara – What lies ahead?

I generally avoid writing about any airline until they complete about a year in Indian skies. However Vistara was different, I first wrote about them even before they started their operations. (Is Vistara’s rumored seating configuration the right mix?) The article has been relevant every day since then and more so in current times when the airline debates and decides on the change in seating configuration.

In October 2015 I wrote Vistara shifts gears – reworks network, starts lobbying in which I said, “.. the airline probably needs a senior strategy team with experience in handling the complex Indian market..”.

Interestingly, the airline announced appointment of Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor who led the turnaround of Spicejet as its Chief Strategy Officer. Mr. Kapoor is slated to take charge soon.

The airline currently operates with a fleet of 9 A320 aircraft and flies to 12 destinations. A look at the current network, sectors, utilization of Vistara and what lays ahead for the airline.

A 50% reduction in J capacity. Why am I not surprised?

and we were assured by some knowlegeable ones that there is plenty of demand for the J product. Razz

It looks like some people really must go out of their air conditioned rooms and see more of the world outside.

Mark my words. They'll soon do away with that 'economy plus'.

Good for them. I think Vistara needs a more aggressive FF program. Sort of baffles me why they wouldn't do that for a few years. That's the best way to get the expense report types to fly you - give them and their families perks.

Former SpiceJet COO Sanjiv Kapoor joins Vistara as commercial and strategy chief

Mar 01, 2016

Sanjiv Kapoor, SpiceJet's former aggressive chief operating officer, Tuesday joined Vistara as its chief strategy and commercial officer.

"Sanjiv will be responsible for managing a wide portfolio of Vistara's commercial and planning functions, including strategy development, network planning, pricing and revenue management, sales & distribution, product development, branding, marketing and customer experience," the airline said in a release.

It added he will also be responsible for "in-flight services and ground operations"

Kapoor, 48, succeeds Giam Ming Toh who is returning to Singapore Airlines on completion of his deputation with Vistara.

Vistara stated (29-Feb-2016) it would reconfigure its aircraft, while confirming it would stay committed to its three-class seating configuration. Starting Apr-2016, Vistara will reconfigure its current fleet of nine aircraft to the new seating configuration of eight business class seats, 24 premium economy seats and 126 economy seats. This change will raise the total number of seats on Vistara’s aircraft from 148 to 158. Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said, “The change in our cabin configuration is a result of extensive research of the changing market environment and customer expectations. Being a young and nimble airline, we were able to adjust quickly to meet the evolving needs of the market and our customers. We remain committed to our pioneering three class product offering and will continue to provide a personalised and differentiated flying experience to all our customers.” The reconfiguration exercise will be completed in two phases in Apr-2016 and Jul-2016. The first retrofitted aircraft will be deployed between Delhi and Hyderabad from Apr-2016, followed by other routes which will be announced in due course. All nine aircraft are expected to be reconfigured by 15-Jul-2016. Future new aircraft deliveries, the first of which is expected in 2QCY2016, will be also have the revised seating configuration.

Vistara stated (29-Feb-2016) it is re-launching its in-flight menu with effect from 01-Mar-2016. The menu will feature Indian dishes and other F&B options such as Arabic Mezze, Norwegian Salmon, Corn & Soya Pulao, Amti and Fish & Prawn curry. In the coming weeks, Vistara will also be enhancing its product and service offerings to further delight its customers. In Mar-2016, Vistara will start offering its inflight entertainment system. It will also be opening its signature lounge for business class customers and Vistara Gold Club members at its hub in Delhi T3. The airline will also offer more choices of destinations and increased frequencies on key routes, which will almost double its domestic capacity in 2016

Sorry if I've missed something, but when does Vistara plan to start Chennai?

They haven't put out plans for that yet. Both Chennai and Kolkata are the largest gaps in Vistara's network.

Lack of slots at MAA maybe preventing UK's entry.

Tried booking a BA flight Lhr-Bom-Lhr on ba.com
It showed connections to Bom via Del on UK

Same for
Lhr-Goi via Del

Lhr-Amd via Del

Few other routes too i.e. Sxr, Hyd

Along with domestic connections operated by Jet Airways. So BA are giving more choice to pax travelling to and fro India.

Wonder how will Executive Club mileage earning will work for flights operated by UK considering UK have an awful FFP?

Vistara mulls making Bengaluru second base

April 4, 2016

Vistara is planning to expand operations in Bengaluru after consolidating its presence on the key Delhi-Mumbai route in its year of service.

The airline may develop Bengaluru as its second base for overnight parking. Its inability to secure night parking bays in the capacity-constrained Mumbai airport and the desire to grow its business outside core markets (Delhi and Mumbai) is said to be behind the move.

Sources said the airline is in discussion with Bengaluru airport and may park two of the four new aircraft there. However, it is yet to be finalised.

“With a focus on enhancing our connectivity in key metros, Vistara has increased the frequency of its existing Delhi-Bengaluru service, offering convenient same-day return options to customers in both cities. We already park one of our aircraft in Bengaluru to facilitate early morning departure and late evening arrival from/ to the city,” Vistara said. It did not specifically respond to queries on its growth plans.

Interesting.

Any news on UK introducing CCU any time soon?

I read somewhere that they are targeting premium pax and CCU has a very low number of the same..

At a min I would imagine premium pax that are based in BOM, DEL and BLR would want a nonstop to CCU (and I would imagine that premium CCU based pax would want to fly to those three cities). Maybe its because of CCU's unions?

Maybe the Tata's haven't forgotten Singur episode yet. I dont think Vistara would fly to CCU till TMC is in power.

Not likely, because Vistara has begun advertising for ground positions at Kolkata. If they are to become a network carrier, it becomes imperative that they add CCU/MAA, regardless of the premium traffic on the routes involved.

With the latest addition by Vistara and including Indigo's most recent expansion, there are now 4 additional flights on DEL-CCU route. Considering all these new flights to various city pairs (DEL-BLR, MAA, HYD and various other cities), is there that much more demand ?

If it was, why AI or Jet did not tap it earlier.

Low oil price has proved to be a boon.

Also, Vistara has already increased Delhi-Kolkata to 3 daily from 25SEP.

Why do you feel AI didn't tap it? 6E moved in very quickly after IT's fall. CCU is a high demand low yield market. AI comes a second at CCU. CCU is also the gateway to the North East, and AI-R has a hub there, which AI feeds into and out of. DEL-CCU has seen 3 out of the four pairs of flights operated by widebodies. A ferry flight on an AT4 was offering seats one night. Jet has not done that well at CCU: I am a bit skeptical of UK making a splash once ticket prices normalise, a bit.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Deepika Padukone to be Vistara’s first brand ambassador

Jun 08 2016

Tata SIA Airlines Ltd, which operates an airline under the brand Vistara, has signed on actor Deepika Padukone as its first brand ambassador, two people familiar with the development said, asking not to be identified.

Spokespersons for Vistara and Padukone declined comment.

“Deepika was chosen as she blends with the Vistara brand,” said one of the two people. “She captures the spirit of the airline—warm and friendly.”

It isn’t clear how much Vistara will spend on the endorsement. Mint learns that Mullen Lintas is producing a campaign featuring Padukone that will debut in July and showcase the airline as seen through the actor’s eyes.

Vistara awaits clarity on 5/20 rule to firm up its procurement plans

9 Jun 2016

Vistara will firm up its aircraft procurement plans only after knowing the outcome on 5/20 norm, the private airline's CEO Phee Teik Yeoh on Thursday said.

"Plan will be clear after outcome of the 5/20 rule ... Till then, we have to wait as it (the outcome) will help us clear many factors on procurement," Yeoh said here, a day before the commencement of Vistara's Kolkata-Delhi flight.

According to him, the airline plans to have another two aircraft by October and expects to be 20 aircraft-strong fleet by 2018.

"New seating arrangement is complete in six aircrafts and in another five it would be done by July ... We will retain business class and premium economy class. The number of seats may change but it will continue. Premium economy is the differntiator from other airlines," Yeoh said.

Recently, Vistara realigned its seats business and premium economy classes. Besides, the airline increased the number of seats in the economy category.

Vistara plans next round of funding; to induct wide-bodied planes

17 Jun, 2016

Vistara is working on plans to launch international flights and for the next round of funding, boosted by the new civil aviation policy that allows it to fly abroad without waiting to complete five years of local operations.

It will induct wide-bodied, longhaul planes and consider starting direct flights to the UK and US, Chief Executive Phee Teik Yeoh told ETin an interview.

Vistara aims to increase its current fleet of 11 aircraft to 20 by June 2018 so that it can fly international routes.

"We have 11 aircraft in our fleet today. We have two more slated to join the fleet in October this year...the first of our Neo aircraft which is the new engine option is slated to be delivered from June 2017 and we would have achieved a full 20 aircraft fleet size by June 2018," Phee Teik Yeoh, CEO of Vistara, told CNBC-TV18.

Vistara announces Kolkata-Port Blair effective Sept 30. This flight is an extension of the existing UK747/778 Delhi-Kolkata-Delhi

UK747 DEL0720 - 0930CCU1015 - 1230IXZ 32A D

UK778 IXZ1325 - 1540CCU1620 - 1850DEL 32A D

From the same date, Vistara will base 1 a/c at Kolkata, with flights between Delhi-Kolkata increasing to 3 daily as well.

UK719 DEL1930 - 2140CCU 32A D

UK720 CCU0655 - 0925DEL 32A D

This is great. While flying on two separate tickets is not ideal, I know many people who can get great deals into BOM/DEL but have to pay a ton just to get the connecting flight within India. two separate tickets always was an issue with baggage. Vistara will be my go to. Plus in US$ terms the difference between economy to Prem Econ is many times peanuts (and all four times my family flew in PE, they were upgraded to business).

Most of the people who take advantage of great deals to BOM/DEL generally fly economy only. Air India allows 25 kgs allowance for all their flights, does not matter if you are arriving on international flight or not, which is 2 kg more than what Vistara allows for economy international connect passengers.

I did not know that about AI (but haven't looked into domestic baggage allowance for a year now). Still I think what Vistara is doing is great. Vistara should take pax feed from where ever they can. Since they operate out of the international terminals in BOM & DEL, this is nice gravy for them

With the knocking out of 5/20 rule.....Vistara should upgrade their fleet to Widebodies now.
