Vistara, AirAsia plan to double their flights in winters

August 8, 2015

New airlines Vistara and AirAsia India are looking to double their flight frequencies in the winter schedule beginning October 25.

Vistara, has proposed 347 weekly flights, up from 176 it is operating at present.

"We have plans to add at least three more aircraft to our existing fleet of six by the end of this calendar year. With that, we would increase frequency to our existing network and announce a few new destinations as well. More details will be shared at an appropriate time," said Rashmi Soni, head of corporate communications at Vistara.

Pratyush Kumar, president, Boeing India, said that the non-availability of planes was a key reason why talks with India's new airline Vistara could not proceed. ''All slots are sold out, especially of the B737s. They wanted to start a new airline and were looking for availability in the time frame and we didn't have,'' he said.

Vistara is adding three more planes. It naturally means more flights ... But it is unlikely to exclusively for winters alone unless they are going a big way to Rajasthan and Goa and even then not by such volumes... So the title of the article is misleading. See what confusion a simple additional letter - s - "winters" instead of "winter" can do!

No comments regarding the other airline involved.... They are a class apart in my humble opinion.

News
21-Aug-2015 10:48 AM
Vistara said it is working towards a 'people first' strategy in terms of its training strategy (Economic Times, 21-Aug-2015). The carrier is focused on mentoring its 650 employees across 10 stations and a corporate office. As part of this mentorship programme, the company's top corporate executives are mandated to spend four days p/a with employees on the ground or at a station, to have 'gup-shup' sessions over tea and focusing on key issues while mentoring them

Vistara seeing high load factors in economy, 'not that high' in business and premium economy
News
27-Aug-2015 10:42 AM
Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said while the carrier is "enjoying a high load factor in our economy class — sometime more than full service competitor — it’s in the business class and premium economy segment where our load factor is not that high" (financialexpress.com, 27-Aug-2015). He however noted that the reception to premium economy and business class has been "growing every month and many corporates are now travelling this class." On plans to increase the load factor, the CEO said: "Our presence is very limited and we will gradually increase our footprint and hit more destinations which will improve our load factor. Many companies want to give us more business but unfortunately we don’t fly too many destinations now. In the next three months, we are going to grow our footprint by 50%."

Flew Vistara UK-933 DEL-BOM a few days ago, got upgraded from Economy to Premium Economy for I do not know what reason, maybe because I was dressed well or maybe they have some sort of recognition matrix. Every which way, the flight left on time, arrived on time, the aircraft was brand new and spanking clean, in short, a great flight.

And a hot cooked meal well presented is always welcome. Door to door NOIDA to South Mumbai took me 6 hours, 2pm through 8pm.

Methinks Vistara have something up their sleeve once they have more aircraft. Something like no frills in the Economy section in the back of the plane, full service product for the middle Premium Economy, and Business Class as usual.

Would I use Vistara again? From my POV, departure DEL from T-1 is now a disaster, so for just that reason, I would like to use Vistara from T-3. Arrival Delhi, T-1 gets me home faster, so I guess Indigo will do.

Vistara shifts gears – reworks network, starts lobbying

Vistara – the TATA-SIA Joint Venture is shifting gears rapidly. The airline is making some network changes and has also started playing the game of lobbying like its competition to sustain in one of the fastest growing markets in the world which also sees cut throat competition.

Last week the airline released a report prepared by industry research body CAPA which was commissioned to study the Indian Aviation industry and suggest changes. This week it has rejigged its network adding frequency on Mumbai-Delhi-Mumbai and cancelling Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai flights.

A look at what the airline is up to, its learning curve, network rejig and the CAPA report.

Vistara celebrates India’s maiden commercial flight

Oct 15th, 2015

Vistara on Thursday said it commemorated the 83rd anniversary of India’s first commercial flight by organizing a special day out for underprivileged children and surprise offers for customers centred around “83”.

“We are very fortunate to represent the great legacy of our parent brands (Tata Group) and keep JRD Tata’s zeal for flying alive,” said Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh in a statement.

India’s first commercial flight was piloted by former Tata Group chairman JRD Tata on October 15, 1932 from Karachi to then Bombay, pioneering civil aviation in India.

As part of the celebrations, Vistara took underprivileged children on an excursion to The Garden of Five Senses in Delhi and engaged them in exciting activities and games, the winners of which will be rewarded with an all expenses paid round trip to one of Vistara’s destinations, the statement added.

Offers and promotions for the customers included an exclusive fare of Rs 830 plus taxes to select destinations and 83 bonus points for all Club Vistara members flying today among others, the statement said.

Vistara partners JAL for first foray into Japan

19th October, 2015

India’s Vistara has continued to expand its presence in international markets with the launch of two new partnerships in Japan.

The Delhi-based airline was sealed a new agreement with Japan Airlines, allowing passengers on JAL’s daily direct services between Tokyo Narita and Delhi to connect with Vistara to 11 Indian cities. And Vistara said it plans to expand the JAL partnership in future, to include combined check-in facilities, lounge access and codesharing.

And to further enhance its presence in Japan, Vistara has appointed Air System Inc. (ASI) as its new General Sales Agent (GSA) in the country. ASI will now provide Vistara with reservations, ticketing and sales services.

“Japan is among the fastest growing travel markets in the world and the origin of significant business and leisure travel in India,” said Phee Teik Yeoh, CEO of Vistara. “Cities like Tokyo and Osaka account for the majority of traffic coming to India and this trend is expected to grow progressively with the strengthened cooperation between both countries. We are thrilled to have established a presence in Japan through the partnerships with Japan Airlines and ASI. With Vistara’s growing domestic network, we look forward to providing seamless connectivity for Japanese customers to and from various parts of India.”

Seems odd that the first BOM-DEL flight is at 750am. Wouldn't business travelers want an earlier flight (6 or 7am)?

http://www.livemint.com/Companies/JNlGkQN2FeRuSevRVPWJwK/A-day-after-leaving-SpiceJet-Sanjiv-Kapoor-joins-Vistara.html

A day after leaving SpiceJet, Sanjiv Kapoor joins Vistara

Oct 30 2015

A day after Sanjiv Kapoor resigned as chief operating officer (COO) of SpiceJet Ltd on Thursday, he has been appointed by Vistara, run by TATA SIA Airlines Ltd, as its chief strategy and commercial officer.

He will be assuming the new role in TATA SIA Airlines in February 2016.

Kapoor will be succeeding Giam Ming Toh, chief commercial officer, Vistara. Giam Ming will return to Singapore Airlines on completion of his deputation with Vistara.

“We are happy to welcome Sanjiv to Vistara as he will be joining us at a time when the airline embarks on a new phase of growth—with the new aviation policy around the corner and the successful completion of the first year of operation,” Phee Teik Yeoh said.

Kapoor said he is delighted to be taking on the role in Vistara and the airline has the best possible parentage in the Tata group and Singapore Airlines.

“Indeed, it is already been talked of as the best full-service airline in India, a testimony to the people and the leadership of Vistara. Given its laser focus on its people, product and customers, I look forward to working with Phee Teik and the entire Vistara team,” Kapoor said.

Vistara may reduce business class seats
News
7-Dec-2015 11:59 AM
Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said the carrier may alter its strategy by reducing business class seats, stating: "We had anticipated business class demand will pick up with better business sentiment. Alas, 20% growth in traffic is mainly in back end. On the contrary, business class demand actually registered year-on-year decline, both in numbers and fare levels" (Economic Times, 04-Dec-2015). He continued: "Therefore, considering market dynamics of demand and supply, we are now looking at smaller business class configuration." He also noted: "Our path to success by focusing on a differentiated full-service airline offering remains on track... We must not abandon our PEY (premium economy) strategy. PEY is one of our differentiators, and PEY is our strategic undertaking to ring fence our product from the constant cutthroat pricing in economy class."

Had a HELL of a time buying a PE ticket on vistara's website using my US credit card. Really??? Tried 5 cards and the 5th one worked. So weird. Why can't the Tatas create a world class website for Vistara? For that matter why do Indian airlines websites all sorta suck?
In US$ terms the difference between economy and PE on a one way DEL-BOM flight was Rs 1500 - well worth it in my opinion just for the extra space on a short flight.

One other thing - the website says you have to call to cancel. Is that right, you can't do that on their site?

Vistara to cut biz seats to battle low occupancy

Dec 26, 2015

Vistara, which operates Airbus A-320s in three class configuration of 16 business seats; 36 premium economy and 96 economy , has now decided to reduce business class seats. "Whether business section is brought down to 12, 8, four or zero is something we have not yet firmed up. We have for now decided to keep premium economy ," Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said.

"The occupancy of our economy is the second highest among Indian carriers (first being discount carrier SpiceJet). We will reduce business and increase our economy seating," he said. All Indian FSCs have changed their strategy over time to remain relevant to the Indian market, which today sees almost 70% of domestic flying in budget carriers.

"We will soon decide whether to reconfigure seating in the aircraft we have or in future deliveries. Reconfiguring an existing aircraft will mean not using it for two-to-three days. We will take a call shortly ," Phee Teik said. The number of A-320s will rise to 20 by the end of calendar year 2018 from nine at present.

Vistara to mark first anniversary on 09-Jan-2016, to expand fleet and network in 2016
News
6-Jan-2016 11:18 AM
Vistara, which will mark its first anniversary on 09-Jan-2016, said it expects to induct four new A320 aircraft and add new routes during 2016 (Business Standard, 05-Jan-2016). CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said: “The induction of aircraft will enable us to expand our network by introducing new routes and also increase frequency on existing routes". The airline is evaluating destinations, including Chennai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Kochi and Srinagar and is likely to add more Delhi-Mumbai Delhi-Pune frequencies. The carrier also noted that corporate sales are increasing and business from Tata Group companies is also growing. From Oct-2015, the airline has begun offering a 2% incentive to agents discontinuing its zero commission policy, leading to improved sales. Vistara also has a sales network overseas and the airline said growth in bookings from markets, including Dubai, Japan and Singapore has been encouraging. The airline said it is looking to increase commercial tie-ups with foreign airlines and open sales channels in other markets.

This is the reason I do all my bookings through Cleartrip (except for AI, which seems to work just fine with US cards).

Its really sad actually that in 2016, Indian carriers cannot (or choose not to) process US cards.

Dispute over use of Vistara name reaches apex court

January 9, 2016

The dispute between over Tata SIA Airlines and Bengaluru-based travel firm Vistara Voyages (India) over the use of the word Vistara reached the Supreme Court on Friday.

The travel firm has questioned the use of the word, “Vistara,” as brand name for the airlines, which is a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines .

A bench headed by Justice AR Dave adjourned the matter till March 4 after the parties informed that they were “trying to settle the dispute.”

Vistara Voyages has challenged the Karnataka High Court’s judgement that had directed a city civil and sessions court to return a suit filed by the travel agency seeking to restrain the airline from using the word, “Vistara,” as brand name. The travel firm had claimed that it was using the mark since 2008 for its travel and travel-related business purposes and had pointed out that Tata SIA was incorporated only in November 2013. Besides, Vistara Voyages also claimed that its application for registration of “Vistara” as its trademark has been pending before the authorities.

Vistara Voyages further contended that the trade marks had been widely advertised and extensively used by the company in the travel and travel related market since 2008 and same was advertised through its website and as such the trade marks had been widely publicised locally in India and internationally for both retail and corporate clients.

However, the the HC had rejected its plea saying that the suit cannot be initiated in Bengaluru courts as Vistara Voyages did not hold a registered trade mark right over “Vistara” and there was no evidence to show that “Air Vistara” was operating or had branch office in Bengaluru, from where Vistara Voyages, a travel agency, has been operating.

Tata SIA Airlines had questioned the December 18, 2014 order of 18th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court refusing to return the plea for want of jurisdiction.

What's the longest nonstop flight in India? DEL-TRV at 3 hrs 20 mins?

Most flights are between 1 -2.5 hours long. With flights of such short duration the draw of Business Class just isnt that great.

Vistara has OTP of over 90% for the past consecutive quarters
News
25-Jan-2016 12:03 PM
Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh said the carrier has had an OTP of over 90% for the past consecutive quarters (Business Standard, 24-Jan-2016). He explained: "We had just seven aircraft to juggle around due to our small fleet. Despite that, we ended up with an OTP of more than 90 per cent. Coming from the rigorous training in Singapore Airlines, we spend a lot of time in planning in what to do to bring our operations back on time. When disruptions happen we have a well laid out plan to bring operations back on time. Plan can only be executed effectively if we have a proper laid out process. We have a good team at Vistara. We have hired the best people in the industry. Over the last two years we have continued to refine the process to increase our efficiency".
