Vistara is expecting to take delivery of its first two widebody aircraft, B787-9s, in February and March 2020, and plans to deploy them to London as one of the first destinations, Chief Executive Leslie Thng told the Indian media.

"First, two B787-9s [will] be delivered in February, March… We have plans to use [the] B787-9 on long-haul. London is one destination we are keen on. We are planning and we will announce when we are ready,” Thng said.

Vistara explores options to gain London slots

13.01.2020

Vistara is in talks with a number of airlines holding slots at London Heathrow airport regarding a potential lease, sources told Indian CNBC TV18.

"However, since slots at such a busy airport are a scarce commodity, we are talking to several carriers to take slots on lease. Simultaneously, we are also looking at London Stansted but we are trying to get Heathrow," an unnamed source said.

The Indian carrier, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, is expecting to take its first four B787-9s in 2020, allowing it to launch long-haul operations. The deliveries of the first two units are tentatively scheduled for February and March 2020. It has six B787-9s on firm order from Boeing but expects to add additional units from lessors, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows.

Besides London, Vistara will target other destinations in Europe and in the Far East in the first phase of its long-haul expansion. Going forward, it also plans to add services to Australia and North America.

At this point if AI leases one of their LHR slots to Vistara, I guess they would make more money than flying to LHR. Razz

Vistara begins leased 737-800 phase-out as A320neo arrive

15.01.2020

Vistara is returning two of its leased B737-800s this month, which it had acquired following the demise of Jet Airways last April, as a result of a fresh batch of A320-200neo being delivered to the airline, according to a report by the Press Trust of India.

The remaining seven of the nine B737-800s it is leasing will remain with the carrier until 2022-23. The aircraft were brought into the Vistara fleet when the Indian government temporarily reallocated hundreds of Jet Airways slots to Air India, IndiGo Airlines, SpiceJet, GoAir and AirAsia India, as well as Vistara, in order to fill the capacity void.

The airline already has 19 A320neo in its fleet, with further units expected to enter service with the carrier in the coming weeks, and replacing the returning B737-800s. Vistara is part-way through it order for 50 A320neo and A321neo, with deliveries to be complete by 2023. The carrier has also ordered eight B787-9s for its planned long-haul operations.

Vistara to add single-class narrowbodies in future

24.01.2020

Vistara will configure some of the narrowbody aircraft it is due to take over the next three years in a single-class, all-economy layout, Chief Executive Leslie Thng told India's PTI news agency.

"We have factored in the operational challenges that may arise from having different fleets and are confident of successfully steering through them," he said.

A joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, the full-service airline currently operates most of its aircraft in a three-class layout with business, economy premium, and economy classes. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, all thirteen of its A320-200s are equipped with eight business class seats, 24 economy premium seats, and 132 economy seats. Eighteen out of nineteen A320-200neo have the same configuration, while eight B737-800s taken over from Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l) have 12 business class seats and 156 economy class seats. The only aircraft outfitted with an all-economy layout is A320neo VT-TNN (msn 7560), which is deployed by the airline from Delhi Int'l to Ranchi and Udaipur.

Thng did not name any specific routes on which the future all-economy class aircraft would be used other than saying that these will be either thinner, year-round routes or seasonal leisure services. He also did not specify how many the airline will take.

"It is important to note that the three-class cabin configuration is one of Vistara's strongest USPs and we have every intention of offering it on as many routes as possible. We are not going to operate our all-economy aircraft under a sub-brand with a different business model," Thng added.

Vistara has a further thirteen A320neo on firm order from Airbus but expects to take more aircraft from lessors, including its first A321-200neo. The incoming A320neo Family jets will replace the ex-Jet Airways B737-800s.

Vistara mulls more aircraft to expand to Europe, US

28.01.2020

Vistara is planning to add more B787s to expand into Europe and the United States as its parent Singapore Airlines Group looks to exert more competitive pressure on the Gulf carriers, Bloomberg has reported.

The Indian full-service carrier, a 51/49 joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, is still in the early stages of planning its proposed acquisition, sources close to developments told the news wire. The exact size of the potential order will, however, be predicated on, among others, the airline's ability to acquire slots at London Heathrow, they said.

Vistara currently has six B787-9s on firm order from Boeing but expects to take additional units from lessors, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. The first two B787s are scheduled to deliver in February and March 2020. The airline has yet to confirm their initial routes but it is understood that it is studying various options for serving London as a matter of priority.

However, sources told Bloomberg that the aircraft would not be suitable for flights to the United States due to the lack of a crew rest area.

Vistara is also evaluating adding more A320neo Family aircraft, including A321-200neo(XLR)s. The carrier currently operates thirteen A320-200s, nineteen A320-200neo, and eight B737-800s taken over from Jet Airways. The B737-800s are being retired as the A320neo deliveries progress. Vistara is due to take its first A321neo shortly.

Don't think Vistara will start any new international route right now, with the coronavirus scare going on everywhere.

The 787 will probably keep doing DEL-BOM and DEL-BLR shuttles for a while.

Agreed unless they get lucky and pick up a LHR slot that an airline had to give up (meaning an airline closes). Unless the UK and USA have big outbreaks like Italy, I think Indian tourists with visas will flock to the UK US for vacation (not everyone will just sit at home). Asia is basically out and even Dubai, with so many foreign workers, seems risky (I think one Kerelite got he virus in the UAE)

Many UK and US based mutinationals (including the one I work for) have issued severe restrictions on international travel until further notice. The fear is more about employees getting quarantined for extended periods, either abroad or upon returning home.

Vistara may get lucky as some airline may want to reduce its LHR frequency and offload the slot for a very reasonable price.

Also while Indians may not want to sit at home, the numbers who will vacation will be reduced leading to cutbacks and losses for airlines operating the US and UK routes.
