Hello folks,
my name is Ramesh, am a native of Bellary - Karnataka and I have lived in 3 countries Zambia, the UK and India. Now back in India, I've been a Bangalorean for decades with breaks in between.

Have been swept off my feet by planes and cars even trains, amongst other things, right from when I was a kid. As an early 70s child in Bellary we used to live near the airport, the Cantonment area.
I still remember the sheer awe and fascination of looking at the airforce sorties, perhaps the Ajeets, in those post Indo-Pak war days. They'd rip the sky apart as they flew by in close, deafening formations every now and then.

I'd make little model planes complete with paper windows, cardboard fins, tails, pylons, plasticine engines and a body made from shaped pencils Smile Would fly them around the house and land them at different airports (rooms). Even made a (kinda) sun filter out of matres of tracing paper sticking them on windows with pictures I'd draw of various airliners accurately clothed in the airlines liveries.

Have been flying since I was a kid - first flight in '79 BLR-BOM on the then new IA A-300. Have flown a number of aircraft types and airlines across 4 continents. And those glorious flying machines still have me in raptures.

The charm of living in Africa of the 70s and 80s was that I got to fly aircraft of the older generations (kind of like a time machine from the 50-70s) as well. Like Air Zimbabwe's romantic old Vickers Viscounts, Kenya Airways Boeing 720s with overhead hat racks like IA's oldest 732s and the ear numbing Hawker Siddley HS748 (Avro) of Zambia Airways. ALIA's DC-8s with her huge square curtained windows placed far apart...

Used to hate Zambia Airways' noisy 707s then, especially when landing roller coaster style, in a Bombay storm with her over flowing sickness bags Smile, but look back at them in fond rememberance now. Some how the current crop of modern airliners, dont seem to look as sleek as her proportions did.

Loved the comfy quiet tri-holers Gulf Air's L1011 and Zambia Airway's pride - the spick and span DC-10-30 fondly called Nkwazi - The nose of which is now saved for academic posterity at Manchester airport in Monarch livery.

Been a quiet audience of this forum for long but decided to jump into the threads just for the nice experience of interacting with you wonderful folk.

Love aviation films (Airport by Authur Hailey comes to mind thougth I havent really watched most of them), aviation Mag's like Flight International - lean a bit more towards airliners than fighter aircraft - but that depends.

I am now an auto stylist by profession (switching from the IT field) and would love to contribute to the interior styling and design of aircraft too as well as livery design...

I could go on but will stop here - dont want to risk boring you guys with my pent up outpourings - hope to contribute constructively here off and on.

A Warm greeting to you good folk from me.

Hello folks,
My name is Atul, living in Harrow, which is in North-West London not too far from Wembley Stadium. I was born in Kampala, Uganda which is in East Africa for those of you that know the area, and moved to Harrow when I was 8 years old.

I have been mad about planes ever since I was taken to the local airport in Uganda which was located in Entebee, on the shores of Lake Victoria, where the smell of JetA1 and especially the noise of the engines, which some say is like a symphony to the ear’s, and sadly will miss it these days.

Growing up in the mid-60’s, is that most of the older generation of airliners had it’s own character, and I feel is missing these days.

I remember the days when I took my first back & white photograph at Heathrow, using a Pentax ME Super, where there was more opportunity to view planes up close, and spent many a summer holiday on the Queen’s Building which is on the top of terminal 2, but is sadly closed to the public.

I especially remember my first flight on a plane which was the BOAC Super VC10
I have been a follower of the forum for a long time, but decided to take the plunge and write a brief introduction.

I love everything about aviation and flying, and would never tire of seeing planes.

I was lucky to see the first flight of the A380 Super Jumbo into Heathrow, and was amazed to notice how quiet it was, as before the whale came in, there were 2 BA 747’s which were noisy.

I am a systems engineer working the London’s square mile, for a large European Bank.

Now I must stop talking, as I don’t want to bore you guys, and look forward to contribute to the future of the forum.

Many thanks for listening.

Regards Atul. Wink

Hello there Atul / Atsey64 and a warm welcome (dunno if i am taking liberties here as I am a new participant though an old observer of Airliners-India Smile)

Must say that your intro was an interesting read. I had stayed at West Harrow for a week or so at a friend's and had lived blissful childhood years in 70s and 80s Zambia, so some points of common referrence there relating to your view point window on aviation.

Do share with us your experience of flying the gorgeous Super VC-10. From the time I set my eyes on that design - I fell in love with what I consider perhaps the most well proportioned and beautiful airliner of all times. Shame BOAC and the Government's indecisiveness botched her sales potential.

Yes, I too found the whale of a jet, the A380, which I saw on her finals into Heathrow, delightfully quiet - almost like she was coasting in on idling engines. For a moment I was wondering if my ears were blocked or if I was standing up wind.

The nosiest alirliners I have every heard on take off have to the the ear shattering pierce of the Concorde and also the rather smokey and elegant 707.

Looking forward to you sharing your rich experiences Atul - welcome aboard.

Ramesh

Hi Ramesh
many thanks for the kind words - am I right in assuming that you are located in India?? if so where.

What is the situation from the official point i.e. the govt/police in reference to photography in and around airports in India, as when I have tried to take pictures in the airport terminals, the police appear very quickly.

Thanks spider guy and hawk21m.

actually, spider guy, pakistan has yet,not opened its airports for photography.
Due to threat of terrorism, cameras are strictly prohibited.
Thats why,you will be unable to find pakistani trip reports.

however,i will see that if i get permission from caa, then i will ofcourse do it.

for the time being,in one or two days,i will upload pictures of indian airlines ads of 1980s and air india ads of 2009.

hope you will support me,and thanks for the reply hawk21m.

regards.

Re-opening this thread to share a sad news. Sam , who was with JBL was well known for his postings in motoring forums but as mentioned in his introduction in this thread, was a keen follower of aviation as well. I had not realised that he was a member here but he had given a detailed introduction in this thread (see Page 2). Sam lost his life in a motoring accident in the Pune Mumbai expressway on 23 September 2012.

People who used to follow his posts will in particular miss both his extensive his knowlege of various issues as well as his ability to see the lighter side of things.

RIP Sam.
