An Indigo Airbus A320-200, registration VT-IDR performing flight 6E-591 from Vadodara to Delhi (India) with 177 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out Vadodara's runway 04 (length 8100 feet/2469 meters) when the crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet and entered a hold. The crew subsequently decided to divert to Ahmedabad (India, runway length 11800 feet/3600 meters), climbed to 7000 feet and landed on Ahmedabad's runway 23 at a higher than normal speed (about 166 knots over ground) about 45 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The airline reported the aircraft suffered a technical glitch. The passengers were taken to hotels, only a few opted to be taken back to Vadodara and board another flight.

Several passengers and others were endangered when an IndiGo aircraft flew close to a road near the Jaipur Airport in February, mistaking it for the runway.

The pilots have been grounded by aviation regulator DGCA or the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The incident took place on February 27 when the IndiGo Flight 6E-237 from Ahmedabad was minutes away from landing at the Jaipur airport.

Sources said the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System went off in the cockpit when the plane moved perilously close to the road, descending at a great speed.

Soon after the warning, the pilots managed a go-around and landed safely at the airport.

The DGCA has suspended the flying licenses of the pilots, the sources said.

IndiGo operates 180-seater planes.

When contacted, IndiGo said the flight 6E-237 was involved in "EGPWS Too Low Terrain" warning during visual approach at runway 27 at Jaipur airport.

"The captain-in-command immediately took a precautionary measure and carried a go-around. The aircraft landed safely on subsequent ILS (Instrument Landing System) approach on runway 27," it said in a statement.

IndiGo said it reported the matter to the regulator and both pilots were taken off flight duties.

Earlier this month, a New Delhi-bound IndiGo flight from Vadodara with 177 passengers on board made an emergency landing at the city airport due to a technical fault.

Why is Indigo not considering A321s.

Probably to maintain fleet uniformity. It would be a nightmare if they had different seat configs. Especially for a time sensitive operation like that of 6E

They did, and then they converted the order to A320s to ensure uniformity in the seat configurations

While this is true, with their current size and future growth, they will likely be adding another type to their fleet. The A321 is a good bet as the newer models have fairly decent range too, enabling them to operate to SE Asia routes with some capacity upgrade.

I also won't be surprised to see them order a wide body in the not too distant future - my bet would be on either the 330 NEOs or the 788s

Probably it will mark the beginning of a new market for existing and upcoming international players including the ME3. With every second home having links to NRI diaspora, airlines may get to hit gold in form of IXC

IndiGo might delay taking delivery of some Airbus A320neo planes

Aug 1, 2016

IndiGo might have to delay taking delivery of more Airbus A320neo planes to allow Pratt & Whitney time to sort out engine problems, the carrier's owner said on Monday.

Aditya Ghosh said IndiGo still expects to have a total of 24 A320neo planes in its fleet by the end of this fiscal year ending March 31, 2017, if there are no delays in taking delivery due to engine problems.

"Pratt & Whitney and Airbus both are trying very hard to fix the issues. Right now we just want them to focus on that and meet those timelines they have given us," Ghosh told a call with analysts.

"Operationally the A320neo continues to be a challenge," Ghosh said, adding that problems with the engines on its existing A320neo planes were making it difficult for IndiGo to maintain flight schedules.

Indigo has added a pre-owned A320 to the fleet today, as VT-IDV.
Interestingly enough, this airframe has done two six-month tours of duty in India, with GoAir; first as VT-WAY (2005-2006), and then as VT-WAX (2006-2007).

Both 6E and Spicejet and battling each other introducing new routes. For example, 6E announced CCU-VTZ and Spicejet followed. Now Spicejet recently started HYD-VNS, and now 6E has announced. For a new route, HYD-VNS, I wonder if there is enough traffic for both.

Dozens of pilots bid goodbye to IndiGo
With domestic airlines embarking on ambitious expansion plans, the demand for pilots and cabin crew across various levels is on the rise. Against this backdrop, various airlines, including IndiGo, are also pitching for increasing the mandatory notice period for pilots to one year from six months.

So 6E pilots are leaving in droves. Any idea where they are going to? ME3?

6E now offers at least 65% of domestic capacity out of TRV - Are they this dominant elsewhere?

6E now offers at least 65% of domestic capacity out of TRV - Are they this dominant elsewhere?

NAG has similar stats - 13 out of the roughly 20 daily departures are 6E.

BDQ seems even worse - 8 out of 13 daily departures are 6E.

Now the question is - is this capacity dumping sustainable?

My home RAJ sees 4 9W 737-700 flights to BOM. 1 AI A319 flight to BOM (changes to A320 on season / demand) and 1 AI ATR72 flight to DEL (which may cancel soon). Letting 9W enjoy the monopoly here of 70+%.

We may not see 6E get to RAJ due to runway length - Sad

The US carriers after years of forever expanding and with numerous carriers, lost money in millions and had to seek bankruptcy many times. But now with fewer carriers and US allowing many mergers, and the existing carriers practicing self discipline in adding new service, the airline industry in US appears healthy. This is even before the oil price decline.

But in India, the opposite is happening. Massive capacity increases in many existing routes, especially by Indigo, which seems to match any new flight started by other carriers, would not be good for the long term health. Plus there are numerous carriers in service and many more wanting to start service. Some new routes do warrant service however and Indigo has to be commended on starting these routes.

Hope India does not follow the path of Indonesia where similar things happened but many carriers were forced to compromise in safety and close eventually.

Indigo has added a new A320NEO to the fleet today, as VT-ITB.

Runway length at Rajkot is not the issue, since 6E operates to Dibrugarh (whose runway length is the same as Rajkot). The real issue is lack of any viable slots at Mumbai, where the airport has almost stopped issuing new slots to anyone due to lack of runway capacity.

Well, the trick is how low 6E's operating cost can go. This widens the gestation period for 6E's new flights and new connections. Not only that, indiGo knows the secret to dominating metro routes - having unparalleled frequencies and timings. That places their stake on the frequent flyer pie at a maximum.

Runway length might be a problem. We never see 737-800 unless there's VIPs on them - IPL Gujarat Lions team had home base here and Jet flew 737-800 only when IPL teams were on them. Same for other cricket matches. We always find 95-100% occupancy on RAJ-BOM routes on 737-700s and A319s but lower on on RAJ-DEL flights even on ATR72. That's why AI is reducing from daily to few days a week to DEL now.

Real "problem" is Indigo usually starts a new station with flights to 3+ places. There's not enough A320 capacity anywhere else than BOM right now. Heard from Jet airport staff that they are planning to add 5th frequency to BOM but not to DEL.

The only option for us is to travel by Volvos by private operators directly dropping us at AMD airport - taking 4 hours.

If theres anyone who can turn the situation at RAJ on its head, it is 6E. Soon they'll be able to afford to launch twice daily RAJ-DEL/CCU/BLR with onward connections and bite off a big chunk of 9W's paxbase that usually connects onward via BOM.

Dude, once again - have you read my post properly?

Runway length is NOT THE PROBLEM. Air India operates a single class A320 to Rajkot. 6E operates daily flights to Dibrugarh, which is at higher altitude than Rajkot AND has the same runway length as Rajkot (6,000ft). Besides, with the distance between Mumbai and Rajkot - the aircraft doesn't need to carry full fuel, hence they can cut back on payload and still be able to depart safely.

Secondly - indiGo has plenty of A320 capacity coming their way, but notice how they've added only 1 additional flight out Mumbai? Have you wondered why? Well, thats because Mumbai has been starved for additional take-off/landing slots. As you rightly said, 6E will only look to launching stations with 2-3 flights initially. However, where would they get the slots from Mumbai if MIAL is refusing to release any additional slots???. Even 9W is having trouble expanding out of BOM (their plans for 2nd daily Lucknow, daily nonsto Varanasi, 4th daily Kochi have all been shelved). The only available slots at Mumbai are at the times where its more conducive for international flights than domestic (i.e - 2300 - 0400). So unless and until MIAL solves the gridlock that is Mumbai's expansion plan - 6E will be stymied out of Mumbai and hence why seeing 6E at Rajkot may not happen in the short term.
