FlyDubai denies report on partnership with SpiceJet

2 December 2015

FlyDubai has denied reports of partnership with Indian low-cost airline SpiceJet.

The company in a statement clearly mentioned that FlyDubai is not in talks with SpiceJet for any partnership.

Media reports suggested that SpiceJet had plans to acquire about 150 aircraft and was in talks of a possible partnership with Gulf's low cost airline FlyDubai.

Apart from FlyDubai, the domestic carrier has received interest from various other Gulf airlines for collaboration, including for possible strategic investment, reports said.

SpiceJet eyes Dubai base with 7th freedom rights

SpiceJet is planning to set up its first international base at Dubai World Central airline Chairman and Managing Director, Ajay Singh, has told Gulf News. Though the Indian LCC currently serves Dubai Int'l, Singh said the airfield was not a good longterm prospect given rising congestion there.

“They have a fantastic new airport coming up with a lot capacity and I think they will see, if they allow this to happen, there will be much better utilisation of that capacity,” he said. “We want to build this city (Dubai) into our main international hub going.”

While intergovernmental talks concerning the Dubai base are underway, SpiceJet will seek to increase existing daily services to the Emirati hub from the current eight cities - Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Delhi Int'l, Kochi Int'l, Kozhikode, Madurai, Mumbai Int'l, and Pune - to fifteen.

Once its UAE base is operational, Singh said SpiceJet would then look to start operating 7th Freedom flights to other countries aside from India.

^^ I hope that SG has truly thought this through. What advantages would they get by creating a hub in DWC as opposed to an Indian city (say HYD)? I can see cheaper fuel being one, and closer to Africa/ Eastern Europe being another, and potentially a lot of local O&D from the Dubai area as a 3rd, but what unique proposition would SG have to attract the local O&D?

SpiceJet Aircraft Hits Wild Boars on Jabalpur Runway, Passengers Evacuated

December 04, 2015

Jabalpur: Passengers onboard a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Jabalpur lived through had a narrow escape after their plane collided with wild boars and went off the runway before coming to a stop at the Jabalpur airport this evening.

Though the plane - a Bombardier Q400 - had 49 passengers onboard, no one is reported to have suffered from damage after the incident.

"All passengers have been safely evacuated and no one has sustained any injury," airline officials told NDTV.

At 7:30 pm, when the commander of the aircraft touched down on the Jabalpur runway he was forced to apply hard brakes after spotting wild boars. As he tried to maneuver the aircraft towards safety, the plane went slightly out of control and skidded off the runway.

"This could have been a tragic accident had it not been for the quick thinking of the pilot," an airline source told NDTV.

The incident raises a serious question mark on the safety of runway operations at the Jabalpur airport.
As per civil aviation rules, a runway should be completely free from any kind of obstruction at the time of landing or take off.

So far, neither the airline nor the Airports Authority of India has issued a statement.

SpiceJet to revamp fleet, may buy 100-150 planes

Dec 15, 2015

Exactly a year after saving it from near-certain closure, SpiceJet chief Ajay Singh is all set to revamp the airline by possibly going in for a complete change of fleet. Singh says he will place a 'large' aircraft order, indicating anywhere from 100 to 150 planes, this fiscal. Both Airbus and Boeing have sent their proposals for the A-320 new engine option or neo and the B-737 Max, respectively.

"Today we are a relatively small airline and can therefore have a mixed fleet. (SpiceJet has 41planes — 14 Q-400 and a mix of 25 B-737s and two leased A-320s). When we place a large aircraft order, we will have either an all 320 neo or 737 Max fleet. If Airbus is able to make a better offer than Boeing, I will change my fleet to all A-320s and if Boeing makes a better deal, I will have all B-737s," Singh told TOIon Monday.

Similarly for the regional jets, Singh is talking to the three big players — ATR, Bombardier and Embraer.

"We will have only one type of regional fleet, depending on which one we choose. All aircraft manufacturers have told us that they will find new homes for our existing fleet if we choose their planes. I am ready to begin with a clean slate with the aim of having lowest possible cost structure that, along with revenue generation, leads to a consistently profitable growth for the next 10 to 15 years," Singh said.

SpiceJet is betting big on Embraer to revamp its fleet?

Jan 4, 2016

After trying his best to bring SpiceJet back from the brink, the airline's chairman Ajay Singh on December 28th had hinted that the carrier may soon go on an expansion drive. And now a PTI report has revealed that the Gurgaon based airline is looking to opt for Embraer jets amongst others to put its best foot forward. The airline was in an highly precarious condition in December 2014.

If we believe the report, Embraer had given a presentation on its aircraft to the SpiceJet management last year. If SpiceJet finalizes to add Embraer jets in its fleet, it will become the second domestic carrier to have such plane after Vijaywada-based Air Costa. In February 2014, Air Costa had placed a firm order for 50 E-Jet E2s.

At present, SpiceJet has a total of 41 aircraft in its fleet that includes 14 Bombardier Q400, 25 Bombardier 737s and two leased Airbus 320s.

As far as funds for aircraft order is concerned, Ajay Singh had earlier told DNA that SpiceJet is more than sufficiently funded. He further added, "There are several ways to finance aircraft orders. We are sufficiently capable of funding those aircraft orders from internal accruals and the arrangement that are possible, short of diluting equity."

Singh concluded by saying that the final decision however depends on the deal that SpiceJet gets.

As I pax I really like the EMB planes for short flights (under 3 hours). Can't beat 2 X 2 seating in couch. If this allows SpiceJet to open more routes or add frequency, could be good for them. That said I can't speak to the economics of the EMB. In the US, its mostly full service that run them (although Jet Blue does)

FIR against Spice Jet for not flying Mumbai flight

Jan 9 2016

Mumbai bound ticket holders filed an FIR against Spice Jet for denying flying on time this morning from Dum Dum airport, aviation sources said.

Some 199 passengers of Spice Jet were scheduled to fly around 0800 hours for Mumbai, but they were told by the airline authorities that due to bad weather in Mumbai the departure was delayed for an unspecified period. But the Spice Jet passengers protested when they saw other airlines flying their aircraft for Mumbai on time.

They then lodged a complaint against the airline with the local police station. After about four and half hours delay, the Spice Jet authorities were making arrangements for another aircraft to carry the passengers to Mumbai.

SpiceJet hopes to place large aircraft order this fiscal

Feb 03 2016.

SpiceJet Ltd is close to placing a “significant” aircraft order, the airline’s top executive said.

“We are talking to aircraft manufacturers—both Boeing Co and Airbus SAS—for placing a order of significant size. We have communicated our quotes to them and we have their responses too,” Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director, SpiceJet said.

“We are evaluating the responses. We want to place order as soon as possible, preferably this financial year. But we need to get the terms and conditions right,” Singh said.

He said the airline is also talking to airplane makers including Bombardier of Canada, Embraer of Brazil and ATR of Europe for smaller planes to connect regional airports.

SpiceJet plans to start door-to-door cargo delivery service amid turnaround plan

9 Feb 2016

SpiceJet is planning to launch a door-to-door cargo delivery service as it seeks to explore other revenue streams amid a turnaround plan.

The Gurgaon-based airline is in the process of setting up required infrastructure for the service, which is expected to be rolled out this fiscal, top airline sources said. SpiceJet has already placed order for 100 sub-three tonne trucks with a leading Mumbai-based commercial vehicle maker, besides leasing commercial space for 40 warehousing facilities across the country, they said.

"The proposed service is in the planning phase. We are working on it and are hoping that we launch the service within this fiscal," an airline source said.

The airline already has the critical air link, he said adding, "we are trying to see if it makes some sense to take it one step forward." According to SpiceJet, domestic cargo is logging a 15-17% year-on-year growth.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Plane-with-211-on-board-loses-tyre-but-lands-safely/articleshow/51217563.cms

Plane with 211 on board loses tyre but lands safely

Mar 2, 2016

In a safety scare, a SpiceJet aircraft 'dropped' one of its tyres while taking off from Bengaluru on Tuesday evening with 204 pass- engers and seven crew members on board. Maintenance personnel at the Bengaluru runway spotted debris of a tyre and immediately informed air traffic control (ATC).

Since SpiceJet SG 517 was the last aircraft to take off before the tyre was found, the ATC checked on this with the airline staff.

Once it was confirmed that the tyre belonged to the SpiceJet aircraft, the ATC relayed the information to its pilot, who then made a precautionary landing in Kolkata, the flight's destination. Luckily for those on board, the tyre that fell off or burst - something which only a probe will reveal - was from the rear landing gear which has two sets each of as many tyres (one under each wing) and was able to land safely with one tyre less.

Confirming the incident, a SpiceJet spokesman said: "One of the rear tyres tyres fell off or burst while our aircraft was taking off from Bengaluru. The pilot landed the aircraft safely at the destination and all passengers have disembarked safely."

Directorate General of Civil Aviation chief M Sathi- yavathy, who has a policy of zero tolerance for safety issues, has ordered a probe into this case. "The aircraft has landed safely and all passengers are safe," a senior DGCA official said.

Bengaluru airport sources said that when the pilot was informed about the tyre, there were fears that the plane may get stuck on the runway after landing in Kolkata. But luckily for the single-runway airport, the plane was able to vacate the strip after landing.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Jittery-flyers-on-Mumbai-Delhi-flight-inflate-life-jackets/articleshow/51486615.cms

Jittery flyers on Mumbai-Delhi flight inflate life jackets

Mar 21, 2016

Many passengers of a SpiceJet Mumbai-Delhi flight on Saturday morning took out life vests from under their seats and inflated them to be ready for a water landing! This scare was triggered when an Airbus A-319 leased by SpiceJet from a Czech company had a hydraulic failure soon after take off from Mumbai with 141 passengers on board.

"While the plane was making a turnback to land in Mumbai, the cabin crew reportedly gave a demonstration of how to use life jackets. This led to passengers getting scared as the plane was over the sea at that time. Many of them assumed the worst, took out life jackets and inflated them," said a source.

The DGCA is now investigating whether the pilot made some announcement that led the crew to give a demo for using life jackets which are to be used as flotation devices in case of a water landing.

All the crew on this plane were foreign. In case of a water landing, passengers are supposed to inflate these jackets before jumping in water by exiting from aircraft either from a door or the over wing exit.

The regulator has asked the airline to tell it exactly what the pilot announced and is trying to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this situation. The safety instructions are given on ground when the plane is about to begin taxiing for take off.

SpiceJet puts bigger aircraft on Delhi-Doon route

April 4, 2016

SpiceJet today said it has deployed bigger aircraft on its Delhi-Dehradun route and will soon put a new flight to Udaipur from Mumbai to cater to the rush during the summer vacation. SpiceJet airline has upgraded the aircraft from 78-seater Bombardier Q400 to 186-seater Boeing 737 on the Delhi-Dehradun route, which sees hike in traffic during the summers.

The new flight to Uttarkhand capital will be operational on all seven days of the week, the airline said in a release. To cater to the peak summer rush (from March to October), SpiceJet has unleashed a whole new summer schedule in which apart from equipment upgrade, the airline has added three new flights and six new frequencies, thereby offering more seats and connecting key metros and cities, the airline said.

“Our new summer schedule is an extension of our existing strategy that will cater to the robust market demand for the coming holiday season,” SpiceJet’s senior vice-president for commercial, Shilpa Bhatia said. As part of its summer schedule, the airline has also reinforced its frequency on the Udaipur-Mumbai route and rolled out a new flight, commencing from April 16, it said. SpiceJet will operate 306 daily flights during the summer schedule as against 240 flights operated by it in the same period last year, the release added.

SpiceJet also hikes ticket cancellation charges

April 8, 2016

SpiceJet has also increased its ticket cancellation charges by over Rs 350, days after its competitor IndiGo announced a flat charge of Rs 2,250 even as the DGCA deadline for airlines to submit their response on the issue ended today.

The revised charges for cancelling a domestic ticket now stands at Rs 2,250 while for an international air ticket, it is fixed at Rs 2,500, SpiceJet said in a communication to travel agents.

The new cancellation charges are effective from April 7, it said.

Significantly, the move comes amid the civil aviation regulator--Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)-- seeking an explanation on the reasons for a flat cancellation fee and a body of air passengers Air Passengers Association of India (APAI) threatening to approach fair trade regulator, CCI for an investigation into the alleged cartelisation.

The Gurgaon-based airline had earlier been charging a fee of Rs 1,899 for cancelling a domestic ticket and Rs 2,349 for an international air ticket.

Most of the domestic carriers, including IndiGo, had increased the cancellation charges by a significant amount in February.

DGCA had written to the airlines, including the regional ones, asking them to explain the reason for increasing ticket cancellation fee, which in some cases now is almost equivalent to the air fares charged for a short-haul journey.

IndiGo had done away with the slab system in cancellation fee and announced a flat charge of Rs 2,250.

The aviation regulator had asked the airlines to file their response by today.

Once faced with exodus, SpiceJet now attracts talent from rivals

April 21, 2016

The turnaround story of low-cost airline SpiceJet has not only been in financial terms, but even that of attracting fresh talents from the industry.

In order to shelve threat from new airlines, the management is now planning to give ESOP option to high-performing executives. “We are working on the modalities of ESOPs,” Ajay Singh, chairman of SpiceJet, told Business Standard.

The country’s second-largest low cost carrier (LCC) saw an exodus of executives, pilots and cabin crews as it faced a near death experience.

According to industry sources, around 40 executives in the mid and senior level are set to join the airline from rival IndiGo.

Saptarshi Bose, ex-senior manager of revenue management at IndiGo, who had earlier worked for SpiceJet have already made their comeback in a bigger role than earlier.

Bose is back as general manager — revenue management and network planning. Pahuna Lal, who was a part of the team at IndiGo’s DRHP (Draft Red Herring Prospectus) filing, has taken charge as deputy head of corporate strategy and projects.

“Not only have many of our former executives joined back the company, people from other airlines also want to join the company now,” said Singh.

He has also decided to give greater roles to the loyal mid-level executives by promoting them to senior positions.

For instance, Kiran Koteshwar — an old timer at SpiceJet and has taken care of financial affairs at the company — has been designated as the chief financial officer.

Sukanya Anbalagan, who was deputy general manager to human resources, has replaced Shalini Vohra to become the head of human resources department. Vohra had quit the airline after Singh had taken charge.

“We want the second layer to take more responsibility; it is always better as they have worked in the organisation and well equipped with the culture. This also gives the team a motivation that you can work your way high up the ladder,” Singh said.

After the new management came in, there was a churn among the top executives. The airline’s entire top rung had quit around late 2014 when Singh took charge of the company. Some of the most high profile exits were Kaneshwaran Avili, who was the CCO, Sudhakar Kondisetty, who was heading the information technology team at the airline and Sanjiv Kapoor former COO who left to join Vistara.

“We had to let go a few executives of the previous management as they were expensive, removing them has helped in cost management,” Singh said.

Similarly, the airline is also now being able to poach pilots from other airlines. Around 18 pilots and seven pilots are joining from IndiGo and Air India.

“Pilots are coming back from rival airlines and with the airline planning to induct new fleet, we plan to hire around 50 more,” Singh said.

SpiceJet to swap wet-lease fleet by June

April 21, 2016

SpiceJet will replace all its seven wet-lease aircraft with dry-lease planes by June 15 this year, to cut costs and speed up operations, its Chairman Ajay Singh told The Hindu.

“(Wet-lease planes) are more expensive than the dry-lease ones. They also have issues of longer turnaround time. We cannot utilise them like the dry-lease planes. In some cases, the on-time performance gets impacted,” Mr. Singh said.

“We took wet-lease planes because they were available in a short time. They have served the purpose as they allowed us to fulfil the commitments to fly the scheduled operations as we had promised. And of course, there are problems with the wet-lease planes. They have a different style and working parameters. By June 15, we hope to replace them with dry-lease planes,” Mr. Singh said in the interview.

SpiceJet has so far inducted seven aircraft on wet-lease, after the new management under Mr. Singh took over the ailing airline in 2015, to ensure passenger bookings do not get impacted. That was the first time an Indian carrier inducted planes on wet-lease for domestic operations.

The low-cost airline faced higher costs and operations were delayed due to the wet-lease aircraft arrangement, Mr. Singh said.

SpiceJet looks at cutting costs and expanding network

May 04, 2016

SpiceJet will return all its wet leased planes and replace them with those on dry lease as it looks at cutting costs and expanding its network.

SpiceJet, sources said, is set to replace all seven planes it has on wet lease. Additionally, the airline is planning to add three more Boeing 737 jets.

“We had wet-leased planes to address the short-term capacity shortage and to rebuild our network. That was a short term measure. The whole idea was that operations shouldn’t suffer and there should be no cancellations,” said a senior airline official.

http://www.financialexpress.com/article/industry/companies/spicejet-q4-profit-more-than-triples-to-rs-73-crore/260475/

SpiceJet Q4 profit more than triples to Rs 73 crore

May 20, 2016

SpiceJet’s net profit more than tripled to Rs 73 crore for the January-March quarter of FY16 on the back of increase in passenger load, higher capacity and efficient utilisation of aircraft.

The airline made a net profit of only R22 crore during the same period last year. The increase in profit could have been much higher had the airlines not taken a hit of R173 for the maintenance of the fleet of aircraft.

Buoyed by the financial and operational recovery, Ajay Singh, founder and chairman said that the company will order more than 100-150 aircraft and the negotiations are in the final stages. “Yes we need to add capacity and will be ordering 100 plus aircrafts in the coming few weeks. In June we will be replacing six of our wet leased aircrafts. Mostly, the orders will be delivered by 2018 till then we will be adding capacity by dry lease contracts,” added Singh

Increased number of passenger flown during the quarter led to an 85% y-o-y increase in net sales to R1448.66 compared to R782.56 crore in the corresponding period of the last fiscal. The Gurgaon-based airline increased it capacity during the quarter as a consequence of which the rental costs increased by 114.42% y-o-y to R247.4 crore.

During the quarter, the airline was obligated to enter into new contracts and also renewed the existing ones pertaining to the maintenance of the engines of its Boeing and Bombardier Q400 aircrafts. Consequently, the aircraft maintenance cost of airline increased by 246.09% y-o-y to R395.58 crore.

“This would be the best performing fourth quarter in a fiscal in our history. We have completely addressed our legacy issues, currently we have no debts on our books. Out of R2,200 crore gross debt we have paid of around R1,500-1,600 crore,” said Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director.

Due to the recovery in the operational efficiency of the airline, the EBITDAR (earning before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization and aircraft rentals) increased significantly by 100.51% y-o-y to R393 crore for the quarter when compared to R196 crore in the corresponding quarter in the FY 15.

In FY16, the no frills airline made a profit of R407 crore as opposed to a loss of R687 crore in the FY15.

TC-FBH is not flying for Spicejet, as it turns out - its currently flying for VietJet Air

SpiceJet plans to list on NSE

22 May 2016

SpiceJet, which has remained profitable for five straight quarters, is looking to list its securities on the National Stock Exchange.

The proposal, in the works for some time, has gained momentum as the no-frills airline has been witnessing a significant turnaround in fortunes compared to late 2014 when it was in the doldrums.

Currently listed on BSE, SpiceJet is one of the few companies which are not trading on NSE. Generally, most of the prominent entities are listed on both the exchanges.

"We are looking at listing our shares on the NSE...Getting listed on this exchange will help our securities have a wider reach and also help in enhancing the credibility," SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said.

The preparatory work has been initiated and the company is looking at the listing and various compliance requirements with respect to NSE, said.

SpiceJet to offer 'taxi pick-up' option when booking flight tickets

June 19, 2016

SpiceJet said it will soon start offering passengers the choice of booking a taxi for a drop to the airport at the time of booking their flight tickets. For this reason, the airline has collaborated with cab aggregator mytaxiindia.

As part of the plan, the airline would give passengers the option of booking a taxi to reach the airport. The option will be available at the time of booking the flight ticket. By doing so, the airline (which operates to 35 destinations across the country), would attract more passengers, thereby increasing its revenues, Press Trust of India reported.

SpiceJet Vice President Amit Srivastava feels the collaboration would get the airline more passengers from tier II and tier III cities. "The partnership with 'mytaxiindia' will encourage us to explore more routes where the demand could be higher," Srivastava was quoted as saying by the agency.

In addition, he added: "SpiceJet expects the initiative to also help in raking in more revenues with more number of travellers and also complement the government's overall efforts to boost regional air connectivity."

Mytaxiindia, or MTI, started operations in 2013 and has more than 454 cab operators on-board its services available in 119 cities, PTI added.

SpiceJet to dry-lease eleven B737NextGens this summer

SpiceJet (SG, Delhi Int'l) will dry-lease a total of eleven B737-800 and B737-900s to cope with an anticipated surge in demand during the peak summer months an airline official has told Bloomberg.

But this summer season, unlike in previous years, the carrier will not seek to any wet-leases as, according to Chairman Ajay Singh, their operating contracts are not beneficial from either a cost or an operational perspective.

“(Wet-lease planes) are more expensive than the dry-lease ones. They also have issues of longer turnaround time. We cannot utilise them like the dry-lease planes. In some cases, the on-time performance gets impacted,” he said.

The Indian LCC currently operates two B737-700s, eighteen B737-800s (two of which are wet-leased from Corendon Airlines (XC, Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen)), four B737-900(ER)s, and fourteen Dash 8-400s on regular flights throughout India as well as to Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Afghanistan, and the Maldives.
