So, the two oldest 737s in SG's fleet were retired. That sounds good.-

Loose screw in engine, flight back

Sep 17, 2014

A loose screw in the engine of a Mumbai-bound SpiceJet flight led to a close shave for 175 passengers on Tuesday morning.

The engine of flight SG 451 failed soon after the take-off from IGI Airport, after which the pilot safely brought it back to Delhi on a single engine.

The aircraft (VT-SPG) was later examined by experts from the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA). "The fuel pump of engine number 1 (which failed) was repaired on Monday night. After completing that work, the engineers did not properly tighten one of the four screws used on the fuel pump. As a result when the aircraft took off for its first flight after that repair on Tuesday morning, pressure did not form inside the engine due to the loose screw and it failed," a senior DGCA official said.

The regulator has withdrawn the authorization power of the aircraft maintenance engineer who certified the repairs on the engine.

A SpiceJet spokesperson said: "There was a technical issue encountered by SpiceJet flight SG 451, a Boeing 737-800, flying from Delhi to Mumbai on Tuesday. The flight had to return to Delhi. The aircraft landed safely... Passengers were accommodated on other flights. All our crew members are fully trained to handle such situations. Safety is our top priority. There was no fuel leakage of any kind. It was a fuel pump issue and we are investigating the cause with DGCA".

This incident comes just days after a DGCA audit of SpiceJet's engineering reportedly raised a number of loopholes. "Based on the findings of that report, we have issued a show-cause notice to the COO of SpiceJet, asking him why action should not be taken against the airline. We ordered the removal of SpiceJet's quality manager. The airline has been warned to rectify the shortcomings of its engineering at the earliest. We will be doing repeat checks," said the official.

The airline spokesman did not comment on the action after the engineering audit. The DGCA had ordered it after another SpiceJet flight developed a snag on June 16.

No wonder they have good loads, they are running sale after sale. But what about the yields ? They have succeeded in spoiling Air Asia India's debut in India though.

SpiceJet COO: 'Interesting to see the new entrant foreign airline change strategy every month'
News
29-Sep-2014 10:18 AM
SpiceJet COO Sanjiv Kapoor via his official Twitter account appeared (25-Sep-2014) to respond to comments made by AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes on 25-Sep-2014. He tweeted: "Interesting to see the new entrant foreign airline change strategy every month and claim full planes when loads in the low 70s...". He separately tweeted: "But then again back in July they claimed they were "sold out" for next two months, when a simple web check could prove that was false" and "You can't learn the jack about a market by sitting inside your hotel room. You got to go out.". Very true, if you are a foreigner... Wink". Mr Fernandes had earlier criticised the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) stating that AirAsia India wanted to become a member but was not given membership. He said: "IndiGo and the Federation of Indian Airlines have been trying to squeeze us out. I have never seen competitors like these. They pushed me the wrong way".

The CIT plane was removed because of SG's financial situation. Lessors are viewing SG through IT eyes.

For the lessors, they'd be stupid if they ignored what happened with IT. Despite SG making all the right noises (around increased RASK with sales etc.), if they don't have money at the of the day, the planes are at risk.

What's wrong with Sanjiv Kapoor Rolling Eyes
Keep the personal attacks and squabbles hush ... not like his airline is doing a good job but that's besides the point.

Some of the codeshare agreements are reportedly close to being signed although some airlines are seeking additional rights which will require change in air service agreements.

Isn't SPT a B737-900? This brings the B739 fleet down to 5. If I am not wrong, SGB, SGC, SGD, SGW and SPU are active now.

SG has cancelled BLR-BOM-STV-BOM-BLR till further notice.

Looks like there is severe crunch of aircraft. They are short by atleast 2 aircraft and hence rotations are all over the place.

Flights are regularly delayed by 30 mins to have tighter turns and accomodate more flights

Had heard of bird hits or at max stray dogs but now buffalo hits!!!

Anything can happen in India...

http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/spicejet-flight-hits-buffalo-during-takeoff-at-surat-airport-617258

Quote:
Surat: 140 passengers of a Delhi-bound SpiceJet flight from Surat had a narrow escape on Thursday evening when the aircraft hit a stray buffalo on the runway, as it was about to take-off.

Due to the hit, the aircraft's engine suffered damage and the take-off had to be aborted. The incident occurred around 7 pm.

"A Surat-to-Delhi SpiceJet aircraft, Flight number SG 622, carrying around 140 passengers excluding crew members today hit a stray animal on take-off roll at Surat airport," said Siddharth Kumar, an airline's spokesperson.

All passengers were reported to be safe; the plane though was grounded.

The passengers were later booked on an alternate flight which had come from Mumbai and was Delhi-bound.

Due to stray-animal menace, SpiceJet has also decided to suspend its services on Surat airport for an indefinite period.

"All SpiceJet flights from Surat to be indefinitely suspended after one of our aircraft hit a large stray animal on take-off toll today. Suspension will be effective as soon as possible," Mr Kumar said.

Surat is a small airport which handles about three flights daily. The airport became operational about two years ago.

I do not know how long ago these were taken, or under what circumstances these airframes were under at the time.

I am a bit surprised at the damage done to the engine cowl. Even if it is a 600-700 kg buffalo. This is about as much damage done to a car if it hits an animal like that. I expected the cowl to be relatively stronger.

I suppose one of the advantages of rear-engine design was the ability to avoid surface debris. I wonder what would have happened to a B727 /MD 80 while taking off ? I think the plane would have bumped and shuddered, but definitely taken off cleanly without significant damage (perhaps some underwing fairing damage)

My impression of the strength and virality of aircraft exteriors was dimmed after the AI 77W-catering truck episode at EWR recently. An object 1/30 the size of a 77W, presumable travelling at nothing more than moderate speed was enough to cause the following damage, which looked more like the aircraft had a failed encounter with a giant sea monster:

Agree. Atleast in the Spicejet case, there was kinetic energy on part of the B737 that was accelerating. In the AI case, the truck should not have been able to slice the fuselage skin like it did, esp at moderate speed (which would not have been over 25-30mph).
The buffalo was about 600 kg, while the B737-800 would have been easily 60 tons minimum (assuming light load, short distance) . That is a 1:100 difference.

Slightly OT, but my Grandfather who was a driver in Indian Railways used to recount how the steam engine (all 200 tons of it) was able to just fling animals in its path at full speed , as if they were bits of paper. Often happened in the forested areas at night..

Accident: Spicejet B738 at Surat Gujarat on Nov 6th 2014, rejected takeoff after buffalo strike

A Spicejet Boeing 737-800, registration VT-SGK performing flight SG-622 from Surat to Delhi (India) with 140 passengers and 6 crew, was accelerating for takeoff from Surat Gujarat's runway 04 in darkness when three stray buffalos entered the runway. One of the buffalos was hit by the aircraft's left hand engine (CFM56), the crew rejected takeoff at about 80 knots after the collision and brought the aircraft to a safe stop about abeam the airport terminal, half way down the runway. The passengers disembarked onto the runway via stairs and were taken to the terminal. No injuries occured to humans, the buffalo was killed, the aircraft sustained substantial damage to left hand engine and left hand fuselage including damage to a static port and punctures to the fuselage skin.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration VT-SPK positioned to Surat and reached Delhi with a delay of 4.5 hours.

The airline confirmed their aircraft collided with a buffalo that had entered the aerodrome through a hole in the airport fence. The buffalo was invisible against the dark background. The airline suspended operations to Surat Gujarat as result of the accident.

^^ The beginning of the end IMO. First sell a boat load of cheap seats, then change everyone's flights due to the cancellations/ rescheduling, then the pressure from the lessors kicks in, so return a bunch of aircraft leading to more cancellations and loss of frequency, the word spreads and business customers/ higher value fliers stop flying your airline, leading to the need for further sales and the cycle repeats ad-nauseum.
