What is there to 'upgrade' to an A320neo?

Yes, they have ordered the MAXs, with 42 on order..

No More Queues as SpiceJet Introduces Self-Check-In Booths

Jul 21, 2016

SpiceJet officials said on Thursday that passengers of the budget airline can now collect boarding cards and baggage tags from self-check-in booths at the Mumbai airport themselves, skipping the long wait at check-in queues.

Automated kiosks are also known as Common-Use Self-Service (CUSS) booths. Fliers can now head directly to a self-bag-drop counter, where an airline staffer will verify the tag and complete the check-in process faster, said airport officials.

"Customer convenience tops our priority list. This service will be useful for frequent fliers as it is designed in such a way that it can be completed with just a few clicks," said Glory Nelson, senior vice president, IT services with SpiceJet.

The service -- earlier available on just two domestic Air India routes since April -- will be available on all AI and SpiceJet flights out of Mumbai. Together, the two airlines cater to about one-third of the domestic air travelers in India.

SpiceJet clears queue at check-in counters, launches smart check-in facility

Jul 29, 2016

SpiceJet has launched Smart Check-in facility which sends e-boarding passes directly to the user's app as one enters the airport.

Launched by Union Civil Aviation minister Ashok Gajahpati Raju and SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad, the feature will do away with the requirement of carrying a printed pass. The feature is a first used by any airline in India and is currently available at RGIA and will soon be expanded to other airports.

"With this feature, we'll have shorter cues and fewer check-in counters and it will also help de-congest the airport which will help accommodate more flyers at the airport," said Singh.

SGK Kishore, CEO, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd said, "We are undertaking a pilot project to dispense away with the stamping of hand baggage tag. Going forward, we want to make modern e-enabled airport and in couple of years, we'll have 80% self check-ins."

Spicejet may place order for new aircraft: Singh

Jul 29, 2016

SpiceJet, which is in discussions with global aircraft makers --Boeing and Airbus -- for quite some time now, may place order for new aircraft by the end of the current quarter, airline chief Ajay Singh said today.

Singh had recently said that SpiceJet was planning to induct over 100 narrow-body planes in its fleet to tap growing domestic demand, which has seen over 20 per cent spike in the last many months.

"We are talking to both Airbus and Boeing. Both of them want to be part of this exciting growth story. We hope that we will place that order soon," Singh said without revealing the order size.

"Hopefully we can complete the entire process in the next two months or so," he added.

"I don't want to comment (on order size) because that is part of the negotiation. In addition to Boeing and Airbus order, we are also looking at increasing the number of Bombardier Q400s as well to 17 from the current 14," he said.

The upcoming festive season and booming passenger traffic in smaller towns; these are the two targets for SpiceJet as it adds four brand new Bombardier turboprop aircraft to its fleet.

Sources said the new planes will join the airline’s fleet beginning October to take advantage of the peak festive season traffic. “We are the largest regional player in the market and will launch flights to new destinations like Aizawl and Silchar. We will also launch additional flights to Dhaka,” said a SpiceJet official, who did not wish to be named.

Fearing collision with AI plane, 30 jump out of bus on runway

Aug 28, 2016

Thirty terrified passengers on a SpiceJet coach at Jabalpur airport on Saturday reportedly jumped off their bus as an Air India aircraft came too close and they feared getting hit by the same. Luckily for them, the AI subsidiary alliance air's plane wing passed very close to the stationary bus without hitting it but this episode has led the aviation regulator warning AI as its ATR-72 aircraft was allegedly not being marshalled to its parking bay by trained personnel but a helper.

The unprecedented sight of flyers fleeing from a bus to avoid being hit by a plane was witnessed at Jabalpur's Dumna airport when an Alliance Air (AA) ATR landed into the city 15 minutes ahead of the schedule time and was taxiing to its parking bay. At the same time, SpiceJet passengers had flown in from Delhi on another turboprop (Q-400) and were boarding a coach to be taken to the terminal.

"At 11.58 am, SpiceJet ramp staff noticed that AI flight is passing by our coach without maintaining standard distance. Ramp staff tried to seek attention of AI captain (but plane kept proceeding)... One of our passengers saw this and started rushing from the coach, followed by all passengers coming down from coach," said the incident report filed by SpiceJet.

Dumna airport director Ramtanu Saha said SpiceJet has lodged a complaint which is being probed and the report would be sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

"As per protocol, AI pilots should have reported the matter to ATC officials. We have got a written submission from SpiceJet station manager and drivers," Saha told TOI.

An Air India official said: "There was safe distance between our aircraft and SpiceJet Q400. However, after parking the SpiceJet captain got physically abusive with our technician. A CCTV footage is available with ATC."

However, a senior DGCA official said "prima facie" the fault may have been of AI. "The AI aircraft was not being marshalled to the bay by either a trained marshal or technician. This work was being done by a helper.

This is not acceptable and the same has been conveyed to the AI top management by DGCA acting chief B S Bhullar. Jabalpur does not get too many flights and airlines must ensure their personnel are present in time for handling flights to avoid situations like these," said the official.

However, the DGCA official added only the probe report will shed light on exactly what happened in Jabalpur. The SpiceJet flight had arrived from Delhi on its way to Mumbai.

Incident: Spicejet DH8D at Tirupati on Sep 17th 2016, runway excursion

A Spicejet de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration VT-SUE performing flight SG-1047 from Hyderabad to Tirupati (India) with 78 people on board, overran the runway end while landing on Tirupati's runway 26 at about 20:10L (14:40Z) and came to a stop on soft ground about 100 feet past the end of the paved surface of the runway end safety area (about 300 feet past the runway end). There were no injuries and no damage.

Wow. That's the 4th daily flight on IXE-DXB.

I can still remember watching the first IX flight from DXB land back in 2006... Back then, having a scheduled international flight at all was a huge deal. What a difference these 10 years have made.

Comeback carrier SpiceJet to order 100-plus planes for Rs 80kcr

Sep 21, 2016

SpiceJet, the airline that came back from the dead, is set to order more than 100 new planes in the next couple of months. These are in addition to the 42 Boeing B737 MAX8 planes that it had ordered earlier.

SpiceJet chairman and managing director Ajay Singh said the airline was in the final round of talks with aircraft majors Boeing and Airbus for nar row-body planes and other manufacturers for smaller regional aircraft. "The airline is ready for expansion and requires more aircraft. We will place the order for more than 100 planes in October or November," he said.

SpiceJet has a fleet of 26 Boeing 737 aircraft and 14 Bombardier Q-400 aircraft.

While SpiceJet has only B737-800 aircraft in the narrow body segment, Singh said he is open to Airbus A320 aircraft if he gets a good deal from the European manufacturer.

Singh said the airline would look at both B737 and A320 and their extended version to service both domestic and international market within a flying range of 4-5 hours. "We don't intend to fly long-haul in the near future. Instead, we will stick to short-haul flights covering the Indian sub-continent and extending to West and SouthEast Asia," he said.

SpiceJet – Fleet, Bases and Aircraft rotations

It all started will my love and passion towards Madurai International Airport (IXM). SpiceJet is the first airline to start international service from IXM and is the largest operator at IXM. I started looking at the rotation of their flights operated to/from IXM. Then I slowly got interested in knowing about the day to day operation of each aircraft and its rotation. Thus the below blog post came up.

https://mirchimustafa.wordpress.com/2016/10/30/spicejet-fleet-bases-and-aircraft-rotations/

MM: this is a really commendable job, a labour of love, and a job very well done. It made a very interesting read, (more os, on a bigger computer screen, as opposed to a phone screen). Thank you for acceding to my request to post a link here (the original link does not work, but simply going to your site did the trick), and of course, thank you for a lovely article!
Cheers, Sumantra.

SpiceJet flies to trigger aircraft acquisition war

30th October 2016

is set to trigger a war in the sky as it finalises a Rs 72,000 crore deal for 100 narrow-bodied aircraft with French manufacturer Airbus. The deal will make SpiceJet the first Indian domestic private carrier to have Airbus and Boeing in its fleet. “Right now, we are very focussed on procuring new planes,” SpiceJet CEO Ajay Singh said. Airbus and US-based aircarft aircraft manufacturer Boeing are locked in a battle to supply narrow-bodied planes to SpiceJet and are wooing and offering the airline with aggressive offers.

A government official said SpiceJet had ordered 40 fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 2014, which it would be delivered in 2018. “Ordering 100 fuel efficient Boeing 737 MAXs could take time, and it could hamper SpiceJet’s growth plan in India,” said a senior industry official.

DGCA probing SpiceJet Q400 nosewheel trouble

Nov 4, 2016

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is probing low cost carrier SpiceJet nosewheel trouble in its fleet of Bombardier Q400 turboprop.

"In six days there were three instances of one of the two nose wheel tyres deflating after landing. This happened on October 25 and 30 and November 1. This happened twice on one aircraft and the third time on another plane. We are probing this. The airline is also raising this issue with Bombardier," said a senior DGCA official. The airline did not comment on this issue.

Spicejet has added a pre-owned Q400 to the fleet today, as VT-SUT.

With Indigo having 3 flights a day on HYD-CJB, Spicejet was forced to cancel one of its flights to CJB. And now we will see if 9I survives on HYD-Jabalpur route, however that flight continues to Bhopal so there are some passengers who go to Bhopal from HYD.

While Regional connectivity is good, however there is still insufficient traffic between many regional destinations to justify new flights, especially from BOM, where there is no room for additional flights.

From December 24th,

* Spicejet terminates Tirupati-Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam (once again Rolling Eyes )

* Spicejet resumes Hyderabad-Mangalore nonstop

SG1071 HYD1300 - 1430IXE DH4 D

SG1072 IXE1450 - 1620HYD DH4 D

* Spicejet commences daily nonstop Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram (becoming the 3rd operator on the nonstop route in the last 12 months! Amazing growth on the route, tbh), and will also increase Delhi-Goa/Varanasi to 3 daily respectively

SG971 DEL0530 - 0750TRV 73H D

SG972 TRV0935 - 1300DEL1350 - 1505VNS 73H D

SG146 VNS1540 - 1650DEL1800 - 2020GOI 73H D

SG147 GOI2050 - 2335DEL 73H D

This also marks the return of Boeing operations into Thiruvananthapuram by Spicejet, having launched their lone weekly Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram last May.

Thanks basheer1211 for the heads up!

This is excellent news. I was really missing this nonstop - connecting through BLR or BOM is always a pain. Even on the direct continuation flight, it adds an hour and a half of travel time.

Finally !! I have no idea why airlines in India do not board by rows or zones, even if the latter is printed on the boarding pass. Gate agents are oblivious to the fact that these mean something. Just speaking from experiencing this every time I am at an airport in the old country and see people running and lining up randomly to get on board.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/airline-allows-rear-seat-fliers-to-board-first-to-cut-take-off-delays/story-ZlSNvsr9GZ8zLtDbWMXKfP.html

Airline allows rear seat fliers to board first to cut take-off delays

Dec 22, 2016

Rear seat passengers booked on a SpiceJet flight get to board first so that aisle is not blocked and timely boarding allows take-off on time. The Air India cabin crew picks up cabin litter before touchdown to ration on an aircraft’s cleaning time before its subsequent journey.

Some domestic airlines have come up with small measures to budget time as choked metro airports such as Mumbai are struggling to cut down long airport waits.

“We have inculcated a high level of motivation and efficiency among our staff to improve the turnaround time,” said Kamal Hingorani, senior vice president, head of in-flight services and customer Experience at SpiceJet. Sequential boarding (passengers between row 20 to row 30 board first) and countdown-styled cell phone calls to passengers late in reaching the boarding gate were some recent measures that helped the airline improve its on-time performance (OTP) even at congested airports such as Mumbai, he added.

“Our OTP at Mumbai in November was the highest (70%) despite the frequent runway closures.” The airline also managed to bring down the average per passenger boarding time from a minute to 45 seconds.

But its limited scale of operations gave a natural advantage to the no-frills carrier, said industry experts. With just about 1,400 arrivals and departures at Mumbai in November, SpiceJet’s operations were approximately one-fourth the scale of operators such as Indigo and Jet Airways. Even Air India operated 2,321 flights.

Domestic flights in India have a turnaround time of 30 minutes. Offloading 150-odd passengers, cleaning the aircraft, running an engineering check, refuelling it and boarding another batch of passengers takes place within that time.

Some airlines have also taken stern action against fliers who hold up flights. “A section of frequent fliers felt that an airline cannot off load you once you have checked-in a bag because security rules do not permit a plane to fly with checked baggage of a missing passenger. Now, airlines have softwares that can easily trace a bag in the aircraft belly,” said an executive with an aviation think tank, adding that there of been cases of late fliers with checked bags off loaded from flights that took off on schedule.
