Wow, looks like even the largest and flourishing airlines have some elements of mismanagement!
In German: http://www.schweizamsonntag.ch/ressort/nachrichten/swiss_bettwanzen_in_der_businessclass/
Roughly translated by Google:
Quote: | LX 155, Mumbai-Zurich: The Swiss flight from August 4, not only the crew and passengers, but also pests were. Several bed bugs were nesting in Business Class, as spokeswoman Myriam Ziesack confirmed. "After the incident became known, the affected aircraft was temporarily withdrawn from the market," says Ziesack.
Pest Repeller examined the plane with a Beagle. "The car was then heated to 60 degrees with a special hot-air oven. In this case, all the bugs and their larvae were destroyed, "says Ziesack. Since Friday, the machine is on the road again. In other controlled aircraft no other bugs were found. Passengers were apparently not bothered by the animals. For a flight attendant had been bitten by a bug.
Preventive measures against the bugs, there are none. «Airlines and hotels can do little about it," says Ziesack. The cabins were cleaned after each flight. The bugs were but difficult to detect, because they hide in the smallest cracks and crevices. According to experts, there is in fact no correlation with poor hygiene. The bugs are introduced via luggage.
For several years, rising international incidents. The cause of the additional volume of the pests called Marcus Schmidt from the counseling office pest city of Zurich the increased travel of people. According to "Le Matin Dimanche», the bed bug incidents over the previous year even tripled. Even in cinemas, offices and hair salons have become a plague. The city of Calvin has therefore formed a working group in order to "prevent a public health problem."
Marcus Schmidt recommends that you check into hotels as First the back of the mattress. "In addition, you should not keep in the trunk near the bed." 70 percent of the callers were advised by him the bugs have spread from the holidays in the briefcase. The rest if it were public establishments such as hotels, shelters, hostels or asylum centers.
A disease transmission by bed bugs is not known. However, the bites can cause rashes and itching for several days. For the exterminator bugs are a good deal. The treatment of an infested room will cost between 800 and 1500 francs. The pest control company of the Zurich Anticimex are already disengaged this year, about a hundred times. That's according to executive board member Daniel Casanova still not nearly as many cases as in Geneva, but about 20 percent more than last year. |
And then rats grounded an AI A321 recently.
Hmm, I guess it won't be too long before the movie 'Snakes on a Plane' is reality!

I'm glad this happened on a LX plane instead of an AI/ 9W plane, otherwise instantly we'd have seen Indians being blamed for poor hygiene. The fact of the matter is that bed bugs are a royal pain, have little correlation to hygiene, and might be picked up in a bag in a hotel room somewhere, and then jumped off the bag to the comfortable seats on a plane.
What's required is to make sure that the proper treatment is done - at least at homes in the US, the folks are recommended to get rid of all mattresses and so on, and just buy new ones. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |
