Gunmen fire on plane at Pakistan's Peshawar airpor

Gunmen fired on a Pakistan International Airlines plane as it was landing in the northern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday night, killing a woman on board and injuring three crew members in the third incident at a Pakistani airport this month.

Flight PK 756 was carrying 178 passengers travelling from Saudi Arabia when it came under attack as it was preparing to land, policeman Asghar Khan said at the airport.

The plane was hit by six bullets, police said, killing the Pakistani woman and narrowly missing the captain. At least one bullet struck the plane's engine, police said.

The woman's daughter was sitting next to her when she was shot in the head, PIA official Mohammad Kifayatullah Khan said.

"When I went inside the plane, I saw the woman lying on the seat and her nine-year-old daughter was crying, 'My mother is dead, my mother is dead'," said Khan.

"All the passengers were panicked. Some of them wanted to get out as soon as possible because they were afraid of fire inside the plane.

"The captain of the plane had narrowly escaped," he said. "It would have been a disaster had he been hit."

The incident will raise further questions about whether the government is prepared for a Taliban backlash after officials announced a military operation to flush the militants from their mountain strongholds in North Waziristan on June 15.

Pakistani jets have pounded suspected militant hideouts and the Taliban have vowed counter attacks.

Islamabad has promised to tighten security at airports and other potential targets, but critics say decades of neglect of Pakistan's ragged police force has left citizens vulnerable.
...
One policeman told Reuters police will not enter the neighbourhood that borders the airport at night for fear of attack by extremists.

Lord almighty - this is getting ridiculous. The Pakistanis are being bitten daily by the snakes they have raised. When will the pain be enough for them to see sense?

Yes, this is really the limit. It is ridiculous that an unarmed civilian aircraft should be fired upon.

The Gulf carriers should all stop sending their planes to Pakistan. Only that will force the Pakistanis to act. I doubt the Pakistan government will see sense even if that happens.

Happening slowly.

EK's suspended PEW until further notice.

There are going to be a lot of angry travellers tonight...And that too right in the beginning of summer vacation...

Expect to see more of this stuff now that the army have commenced their operation in North Waziristan.

The only carriers that fly to Pakistan anymore are the Middle-Eastern ones. Should they pull the plug as well, the Pakistani aviation scene will be left with little.

I'd love to put the blame on the US for coddling and "encouraging" a rogue state like PK. However at the end of the day, I don't think it's as much the west's fault, as it is the Saudi's fault for pushing their "extremist" view of religion to the sub-continent. Historically PK was quite tolerant an peaceful and the founder was fairly clear that he wants to keep PK that way. What happened over the past 30 odd years is largely IMO due to Saudi/ Wahabbi funding.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahhabi_movement

Quote:
In July of 2013, European Parliament identified the Wahhabi movement as the source of global terrorism and a threat to traditional and diverse Muslim cultures of the whole world

Further:

Quote:
Practices that have been forbidden by Wahhabi preachers include performing or listening to music, dancing, fortune telling, amulets, television programs (unless religious), smoking, playing backgammon, chess, or cards, drawing human or animal figures, acting in a play or writing fiction (both are considered forms of lying), dissecting cadavers (even in criminal investigations and for the purposes of medical research).[29] Common Muslim practices Wahhabis believe are contrary to Islam include listening to music in praise of Muhammad, praying to God while visiting tombs (including the tomb of Muhammad), celebrating mawlid (birthday of the Prophet)[30] building of minarets or use of ornamentation on or in mosques.[31] The driving of motor vehicles by women is allowed in most countries but Wahhabi-dominated Saudi Arabia. [32][33][34]

Following the preaching and practice of Abdul Wahhab that coercion should be used to enforce following of sharia, an official committee has been empowered to "Command the Good and Forbid the Evil" (the so-called "religious police") [35][36] in Saudi Arabia—the one country founded with the help of Wahhabi warriors and whose scholars and pious dominate many aspects of the Kingdom's life. Committee "field officers" enforce strict closing of shops at prayer time, segregation of the sexes, prohibition of the sale and consumption of alcohol, driving of motor vehicles by women, and other social restrictions.[37]

Wahhabism emphasizes `Thaqafah Islamiyyah` or Islamic culture and the importance of avoiding non-Islamic cultural practices no matter how innocent they may appear,[38][39] on the grounds that the Sunna forbids imitating non-Muslims[40] Foreign practices sometimes punished and sometimes simply condemned by Wahhabi preachers as unIslamic, include celebrating foreign days such as Valentine's Day[41] or Mothers Day.[38][40] shaving, cutting or trimming of beards,[42] giving of flowers,[43] standing up in honor of someone, celebrating birthdays (including the Prophet's), keeping or petting dogs.[29]

Wahhabism puts great store in behavior and appearance, robes for men long enough to cover the ankle are considered an example of unseemly pride, although not forbidden.

No wonder a peaceful and "normal" Muslim state is turning into a terrorist hot bed! I just hope we don't get this in despicable set of practices in India...

Not much but Turkish, Eritrean, Sri Lankan, Air China, China Southern, Safi, Kam and Thai also fly to Pak, Iran Air too if thats excluded from Gulf grouping.

For PEW only EK and EY suspended ops, QR resumed after a few days, GF and G9 never left, not sure about SV.

They had terrible load factors on this route anyways.
So it was coming, but more like a pre-mature end due to the recent incidents..
