According to the famous experimental pilot Anatoliy Kvochur, the MiG-41 is to be capable of reaching speeds above Mach 4, even Mach 4,3. That would make the plane faster than the (now retired) American SR-71 Blackbird. Currently, the Foxhound is capable of flying at speeds of Mach 2.8.
Nevertheless, while developing a Mach 4+ replacement for the Foxhound, the Russians will to continue the modernization program of the Foxhounds, overhauling over 100 aircraft.
MiG-31 is an interceptor based on MiG-25 Foxbat, with a combat radius of 720 km. A group of four Foxhounds is able to control an area that is 1000km wide; 190 MiG-31s are currently in service within the Russian Air Force, 100 of those are still flyable. |

...and a turning radius some one-seventh of the same?  No wonder, they can patrol a large area. Return to base is not optional Jokes apart, I remember that thread on the negative capabilities of this interesting line of planes. Aseem: I remember your post on your discussion with a kid who said his Papa had seen at least one Mig-31 at Bareilly. I think both Shukla-ji and I had replied on that thread.

Why turning radius is becoming an issue? These planes were designed for high speed interception and not for dog fight. Their fire and forget missile could have a range of 100 miles and could attack cruise missile with low radar signature.If they need to take quick turn they will reduce speed and not at M 3.

I kept questioning that kid if he was referring to Mig-21, but he persisted he was talking about Mig-31. And this was in context of Bareilly AFB. I need to reemphasize kid, as they won't lie unless they've heard it wrong.

Dr. Ganguly, the IAF has evaluated the Mig-31 `Foxhound' in the past (the former Soviet Union tried to sell it to India, as Aseem's post also verifies), and found this high-maintenance aircraft eminently unsuitable as an interceptor. India only went in for the recee version of the Mig-25 `Foxbat', which was surprisingly offered by the Soviets. Even this has fulfilled its mission completely: the IAF will not need a high-speed high-altitude recee aircraft, given that India's AEW&C aircraft and satellites suffice for the same. Sir, as armchair enthusiasts, let us not under-estimate the IAF's think tank. They are one of the best in the business.
