They took a lot of personal initiative, to get the airline out of the red. One can toe the line, and be honest in one's dealings, do this collectively, and still, have the organisation slide down. On the other hand, Govt-run organisations (not just in India) are often not an epitome of efficiency. We remember such people because they chose to be mavericks, with a missionary zeal. I really appreciate the work of Nandan and his team, as they chose to be such different people, in spite of their hands being tied with bureaucratic, and political red-tape. Talking of Govt organisations, I too work for a semi-Govt organisation, and I guess, I must stop before someone questions my work-related credentials Smile
Cheers, Sumantra.

Again story of good promoter, good business plan to connect tier 2 and Tier 3, but poor execution of business plan due to non professional management team … They got two aircrafts E 170 in Dec 2012 , painted in Jan 2013 parked in UK as do not have AOP .. brought in India in June 2013 able to Launch service in Oct 2013 … Very few airline can afford grounding of 10 months of two aircrafts , paying lease charges , preservation charges , parking charges , maintenance reserve for minimum guarantee FH which is close to 250 / month … Again bought two aircrafts E 190 in Dec 2013 still waiting for CFA and rotation …. Professional airline even in India does not take more than 7 days from date of aircraft landing in India and entry in revenue service … This show capability of management team …let see how it progress from here or other Paramount in making

Right on. Indian aviation is littered with failures with airlines similar to Air Costa - Paramount, MDLR, Jagson... and I am afraid this will be next. We have Air Asia about to launch almost similar routes with MAA as base and Air Costa will be left with Vijayawada only, which is not exactly a city which needs lots of flights now.

Air Costa is already up and running, while AirAsia is still nowhere in sight.
I would cut Air Costa some slack. If they keep their ambitions realistic and their heads between their shoulders, they can make it work. From the look of it, they seem to have got the basics right. Let's hope they continue doing the right things in the future.

Amount of loss build up and likely to build due to non utilization of two nee E 190 it will be challenge them to keep cash flow going .. Apart from this they need team to run same .. This is evident from no of cancellation and delay ... again easy to blame everything on JAI fog ... but reality needs to be checked ..

Air Costa plans to start operations from three more cities

Jan 28, 2014

Air Costa plans to start operations from Visakhapatnam, Madurai and Coimbatore.

Sources said that Air Costa is awaiting air operating permits and schedule operating permits from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the routes and timings of flights from these three cities.

The airline, which is focusing on improving connectivity between tier-2 and tier-3 cities, also plans to add two more Embraer jets after getting the permits from the DGCA.

Any information or updates about the new routes? Are the 2 E190's still sitting in hyderabad? Looks like they are loosing lots of money with the A/c's sitting on the ground. Is Hyderabad going to be the next base for the 2 E-190's?

Air Costa expects break-even in operations by 2015

February 25, 2014

Air Costa expects to achieve break-even in operations by March 2015 even as it plans to add as many as 10 aircraft to the fleet, its chairman Ramesh Lingamaneni said today.

The Vijayawada-based operator is currently operating 12 flights a week with 2 aircraft, enjoying 70 to 75 per cent occupancy rate.

"We are expecting break-even with five aircrafts by 2014-15. That is our expectation. By 2015, we plan to expand our operations pan India also. Currently, two aircraft are operating and another two will be operational by next month," Lingamaneni told PTI.

"During the summer schedule there will be 24 to 25 flights a week. Currently there are 12 flights a week," he said.

"From January 2018 onwards, delivery of four aircraft will be taken every year for the next 20 years. It is a business plan for the next 20 years. It is a 100 aircraft deal with 50 firm and 50 optional," Lingamaneni explained.

Budget carrier Air Costa eyes IPO in three years

March 6, 2014

India's newest budget airline Air Costa Ltd, which started operations last October, is mulling to go public over the next three years as it hopes to clock profit in the upcoming fiscal starting April 2014, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The Vijayawada-based regional carrier has also been approached by a few investors and may look at selling stake in the company after some time, Air Costa's chairman Ramesh Lingamaneni told the global news agency.

From MAA
1 AMD via BLR apart from 1 non-stop
1 HYD

All these rotations done with 2 a/c

Air Costa adds CJB to its network from Mar 30 connecting 3 cities from here.

HYD via BLR and VGA via BLR

The rotation is done with one a/c as follows

VGA-BLR-CJB-BLR-HYD-MAA-HYD-BLR-CJB-BLR-VGA

With this rotation, HYD-MAA gets one more flight.

So LB increases HYD-MAA from 1x daily to 3x daily.

Only 9W operates 3x daily in this sector.

One more aircraft rotation pending. THey are actualy looking to link MAA with PNQ but not getting slots from IAF

One 9W flight, as we discussed in the other thread, is being withdrawn from Summer schedule, so the morning BLR-CJB and evening CJB-BLR would be good for LB

Its time they start marketing and selling on the portals. If without portals their LF is in 70s now, they should make the most of it. If not profits atleast cash would flow with more LF

Why are they shying away from the Portals? Surely it's good to go through all channels?

With this HYD-MAA has about 20 flights daily and almost every Southern flight route has heavy competition, even the minor ones. When Air Asia and Tata start services, there will be even more competition. In the short term, you will see even more sale fares from the likes of Spicejet and the new entrants. It sure will be a bloodbath, I dont think Air Costa will make it, just like Paramount earlier.

For all those singing praises about BLR CJB for Costa, just don't forget that it is a 30 minute hop - not the ideal stage length for a Regional Jet.

9W is selling at 3700+ about 30 days in advance

Interestingly its a triple daily ATR ops now so a regional jet can attract some traffic

9W is higher now because they are a monopoly. When Costa comes, fares will crash and that hurts Costa more than 9W .

A lot of people who otherwise travel by air dont even bother to take the flight on this sector. They just take the bus!!!

LB adds IXM to its network with its 4th a/c connecting MAA twice daily

The rotation is VGA-HYD-MAA-IXM-MAA-CJB-MAA-IXM-MAA-HYD-VGA

This rotation brings one MAA-CJB-MAA too and 4th daily HYD-MAA by LB

They actually pop up as the cheapest option on BLR-MAA-BLR on weekends when booked reasonably in advance.

Tempting enough for me, as I usually take the train back and forth (Shatabdi, Double Decket).

Quote:
Air Costa has cancelled a significant number of flights listed in its approved Summer Schedule. As a startup airline with a different model, it faces issues on many fronts: one of which is an insufficient number of sufficiently qualified pilots to fly its four airplanes: two Embraer E170s and two Embraer E190s.
.
.
.
The airline is tackling the situation by phone-calling each and every affected customer, explaining the situation and offering a full refund, contrasting a situation in late 2011 when the DGCA had pulled up IndiGo, SpiceJet, and the then-operational Kingfisher Airlines for having allegedly cancelled flights without informing passengers.
.
.
.
The airline presently has 22 pilots qualified to fly on the E170/E190 airplanes. Typically, an airline requires 10 pilots per aircraft, or 5 sets of crew per airplane. With 22 pilots, there are enough to fly just 2 aircraft, leaving the two other airplanes with no crew.
.
.
.
.
The airline had planned for a sufficient number of pilots to fly the routes in the summer schedule, starting 5th April 2014, but that plan didn’t materialize. 8 foreign commanders were supposed to have cleared the Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorization (FATA) examination-an exam conducted by the Indian DGCA to ensure foreign pilots are up to speed with Indian regulations- at least 15 days before Air Costa was to have kicked off its full network under the Summer Schedule. However, the crew did not clear the examination, which is held fortnightly.

I cannot understand why Indian airline companies don't want to invest in training.
AFAIK, only Indigo has a cadet training program.

totally defeatist attitude this - not wanting to spend a pie and still cribbing about pilot shortage.

In this case the pilot shortage seems to have less to do with the lack of skills, more to do with the DGCA having failed the entire batch of pilots who appeared for the Indian license...

There are more than enough CPL holders out there. Unless Air Costs is asking (potential) new FOs to pay and arm and a leg for training they should attract pilots- and there's a big enough pool for them to pick the most talented.
Finding type rated Captains on the other hand will be hard .... they will probably have to bring in a bunch of expats.

Indigo is a good airline but their cadet training program is a scam (for the pilots). They're making pilot hiring a money making enterprise- sad that more and more airlines are doing this. It's a system which doesn't promote hiring the most talented, rather the ones who can afford spending 20+ lakhs to get the job.

What d'you know - my company have cancelled the Costa flight on 18/5 and booked the SG Q400 instead - premium seat, a sandwich, the works.

LB 681 suffered a series of delays and cancellations in weeks past, hence leading to the decision.

Out of 4 aircrafts, 3 (2 E190 + 1 E170) are in service.

Out of 20 flights cancelled, 10 has been started from May 01.

The below rotation is yet to be started.

From: http://www.telegraphindia.com/1140525/jsp/business/story_18379037.jsp

Quote:
Air Costa has achieved a higher passenger load factor in April, beating top low-frill airlines IndiGo and GoAir.

Air Costa managed to achieve a load factor of 77.8 per cent, while IndiGo and GoAir clocked 76.9 per cent and 76.1 per cent, respectively, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
...
The airline, which started operations in October, has a fleet of four, comprising two-types of Embraer aircraft, and flies to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Vijayawada. It recently announced two new services from Hyderabad to Bangalore and Coimbatore.

“South Indian tier 2 and 3 cities still lack proper air connectivity. However, with the industry growing in the south and many business travellers making frequent visits to the region, we believe we have tremendous scope for growth. Also, there are many major tourist destinations here and people want direct air connections,” said Lingamaneni.

The carrier operates 28 daily flights and will soon start operations to cities such as Goa, Pune and Madurai. However, it plans to start operations across the country by next year. It is in the process of applying for permit for the same.

^^^^ I would have assumed this rotation would be done by the same a/cgoing - VGA-HYD-MAA-IXM-MAA-CJB-MAA-IXM-MAA-HYD-VGA. But the evening arrival from IXM and departure to VGA are at the exact same time. Unless that is a typo - 1hr 20 mins is way too much block time for MAA-IXM.
