Hours before the first Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft left Seattle to undertake a 14-hour non-stop flight to Delhi, Thulasidas told the media that the airline had decided to mount additional fuel tanks on the last two Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft, helping them to fly non-stop between Bangalore and San Francisco carrying 238 passengers in first, business and economy classes.
http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/singapore-air-show/2008-02-11/air-india-extends-its-reach-worlds-longest-range-jet
On February 8, Air India placed its fourth 777-200LR on a new direct route between Delhi and New York JFK Airport, and expected the imminent arrival of airplane No. 5 as we approached the start of this year’s Singapore show.
The world’s first 777-200LR fitted with an auxiliary fuel tank, Air India’s latest piece of long-range equipment carries 238 passengers–eight in first class, 35 in business class and 195 in economy–on the 6,350-nm route to New York.
Which (two ?) aircraft have this option? |
as far as I know, ALE/ALF/ALG/ALH have these. _________________ Causal Determinism : We are hardwired to need answers. The Caveman who heard a rustle in the bushes and checked out to see what it was, lived longer than the guy, who assumed it was just a breeze.

The LRs are
VT-ALA, VH-ALB, VT-ALC, VT-ALF and VT-ALG ,

Etihad Airways promises red carpet welcome to Air India pilots with double salaries and perks
Wednesday, Dec 4, 2013
Air India Boeing 777 pilots are most happy with the Jet-Etihad deal. For, they are suddenly in demand.
Last week, Etihad Airways emailed Air India pilots individually, promising them a red-carpet welcome with tempting salaries and compensations that are hard to refuse. AI pilots who have been complaining of salary cuts for the past year or so are more than glad to accept the offer.
“Etihad Airways invited us through personalised emails. The vacancies are for Indian pilot licence holders with experience of flying Boeing 777 aircraft,” a senior AI pilot said.
Only Air India and Jet Airways so far operate Boeing 777 aircraft in the country. At least 10 AI pilots have confirmed that they would join the Etihad Airways. They will be based in Abu Dhabi.
Etihad airways needs 50-70 pilots for ultra-long haul flights, specially to the US, Canada and other places as it will be adding over seven Boeing 777 aircraft by April next year. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

^^ Good for the pilots - those that are interested should quickly grab the offer and move over to EY. AI will manage I'm sure! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

AI firms up deal to sell 5 Boeing 777 to Etihad
December 7, 2013
Air India has finalised a deal to sell its five wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft to Etihad Airways by signing an agreement with the Abu Dhabi-based carrier, airline sources said today.
Top Air India officials signed a formalising agreement with their Etihad counterparts in Abu Dhabi earlier this week, they said, adding that the deal would be implemented after the Indian government's approval, which is expected soon. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

AI may also get rid of all of its eight Boeing 777-200 (long range) fuel guzzlers. While five of them are being sold to Etihad, AI is going to deploy Dreamliners on the routes the other three fly to by February. "Once we do that, then we have no use for the B-777 200 LRs. To have an ultra luxury product, AI chose to have only 238 seats in the aircraft while globally airlines have over 300 seats on this aircraft. So the economics per seat never worked out. We may either have more seats on them or sell them off," said an official.

They should reconfigure them for VIP use and hand them to the IAF. The 744s can be retired.
It will also end the silly practice of leasing AI aircraft whenever the President or the PM go on foreign visits. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Air India to sell 3 of its ‘costly’ Boeings to pare debt
14 Jan, 2014
Air India plans to sell three more of its Boeing 777-200 Long Range planes as it has found the planes too costly to suit its plan to turnaround to profitability, its finance chief said on Monday. "We tried different configurations for the planes, but saw nothing is working out. So we are planning to sell those too," S Venkat told ET.
Venkat said the remaining three are of more recent origin and the airline aims to earn more from the sale of those.
"The total we earn from the sale of eight planes should be enough to retire debt on them," he said without elaborating.
State-owned Air India is likely to float tenders for sale of these planes by the end of February, he added. "When we bought the (777) planes, we had made certain projections as to their fuel burn, maintenance cost and the kind of load factors we would get. That hasn't worked out," he said, explaining why the airline has decided to sell the planes. He added without elaborating that like the last five, Air India has found ample demand among foreign carriers for these planes as well. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Also, do take note that EY's counterparts in Qatar (QR, i.e.,) have registered their Boeing aircraft as A7-B** and Airbus A7-A**. This was noted by Dad back in 2008. |

The last picture of VT-ALA in her Air India colors, as she arrives at AMS sans titles, as A6-LRA for repaint. The only Air India 777-200LR to wear two liveries (current, and the "stillborn" colors), she has now been painted in full Etihad livery and will be back in AUH soon.
