I don't know how it is with other airlines but you make a good point. Some airlines do add sim sessions (above the legal requirements) to get pilots to 'fly' but it's not common ..... and is that enough?
IMO airlines generally do not encourage pilots to hand fly. That being said in a lot of cases pilots would choose not to. Departing from a busy airport, busy arrival time, time of day, complex arrival route- just a few examples where someone would think twice before turning off automation.

What I think is an industry negative trend are the airlines stopping pilots from hand flying ILS approaches. I think pilots should be able to make that choice- heck if airlines want to regulate that give them limits. Say they can only do it when the weather is better than so and so and they have these things available and it's not busy etc etc. But have a policy and let pilots do it if they want.
Does this explain why Asiana crashed? Absolutely not however lets not forget that company culture (not to mention social culture) bears some of the responsibility even tho the pilots are the last resort.

Agreed, pilots are becoming more like Systems managers. They have to manage the various flight segments, select climb, cruise and descent profile to suit "fuel" management Mad .

While it is important to keep overall cost of operation controlled, and fuel is an important component, I think its necessary to keep perspective. You may have a safe incident free period of many "quarters", but that one accident will hit you and set you back by millions that you tried to conserve all the while.

Unfortunately the world is being ruled by economists and accountants, not often the most rational species.

On a personal level, , while I rely on the ABS/EBD of the car to do its job, I' d never use the Cruise control while driving..

The US FAA has mandated that foreign airlines must use automatic landing aids, instead of visual cues, when approaching San Francisco airport where an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 crashed.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that it has noticed a higher number of aborted landings, or go-arounds, by foreign carriers conducting visual approaches after the incident involving the South Korean carrier.

The FAA added that it was looking into an incident involving an aircraft operated by Taiwan's EVA Air on July 23, when it approached San Francisco at a lower than normal altitude.

The FAA said that it would assign "alternate instrument approaches", including the use of global positioning systems (GPS), to foreign airlines on approach into San Francisco. US airlines are not affected by this rule.

This comes as ongoing upgrade works to two of San Francisco's runways, 28R and 28L, mean that pilots will not be able to use glide slopes, an instrument landing aid, until late August. These guide pilots down a specific path until they land.

The Asiana pilots were trying to land on runway 28L using visual cues when last month's crash occurred. The aircraft was also flying at a lower than normal altitude before crashing.

Three passengers died in the incident and investigators are trying to understand why the aircraft was flying so low, and why the pilots waited until the last few seconds before trying to abort the landing.

South Korea temporarily suspends Asiana flights to San Francisco



South Korea has handed down a 45-day suspension of Asiana Airlines' service from Incheon to San Francisco as punishment for last year's fatal crash at SFO.

An Asiana Boeing 777 crashed on landing at San Francisco in July last year, killing three passengers with 180 injuried.

The US National Transportation Safety Board cited a faulty approach for landing was the likely cause as the plane clipped a sea wall with its landing gear.

The South Korean transport ministry issued a statement announcing the suspension, which could have been 90 days, noting the airline's efforts in helping to minimize casualties after the crash.

However Asiana said it was still harsh and would appeal the ruling.

"The company will seek a re-deliberation and also consider a possible legal injunction," an airline statement said.

The saying is - "Tu mala maarlya sarkha daakhav ani mi laaglya sarkha daakhavto"

you show that you are bashing me and I will show that I am getting hurt ".

The South Korean Transport ministry vs Asiana. An action taken nearly 2 years later, that too in such a minimalistic, formality-sake fashion can only be interpreted by the above saying.
