Saudi Arabia shifts weekend to Friday-Saturday

23 June 2013

King Abdullah decrees change from Thursday-Friday weekend to bring biggest Arab economy's working week into line with neighbours

Saudi Arabia has announced it is switching its official weekend to Fridays and Saturdays, bringing its working week closer in line with other countries in a move long desired by many of its businesses.

The kingdom, the biggest Arab economy, had been the only member of the six-member Gulf Co-operation Council to have a Thursday-Friday weekend after Oman shifted to a Friday-Saturday weekend last month.

The surprise move, which will be applied from this week, was immediately welcomed by Saudi economists and businessmen.

Welcome to the world (well - at least neighboring countries)! What happened to the Mullahs though? How come they're not acting up?

Surprise, surprise. Qatar changed since 2002. Wonder why Saudi took so long?

The King of Saudi Arabia is more than just a King. As the official keeper of the two holiest shrines in Islam, he is also the most powerful figurehead in the Islamic World. No two bit mullah anywhere will dare to oppose his decree.

and Saudi Arabia is a monarchy. Oppose the King and ....Chop Chop....you get the picture.

Sometimes I think that is a whole lot better than the deal we have. Forget the King, any order signed by a two bit Royal in Riyadh (there are thousands of them btw) will not be challenged by the officialdom. Quick an fast decisions.

No Medha Patkars/Arundhati Roys/Kejriwals of the world daring to oppose that Razz

Iraq is already on Friday/Saturday. Afghanistan and Yemen are the only ones left.

Why don't they all shift to the saturday-sunday weekend like the rest of the civilized word? They can take a coupe of hours off on friday afternoon for their prayers if they want.

Couple of hours off on Friday afternoon - would equate to almost no work done on Friday. Much better to take Fri/ Sat off, the world would be much more boring if everything were the same everywhere Smile

Your definition of civilized is the "Christian World".. For Muslims and Jews Sunday is not a holy day. Friday (and in case of Jews Saturday also) is the holy day - hence the definition of weekend.

You just brought back issues of the Holy Crusade Razz

Great. One day forward into the modern world.

Maybe in about 150 years, the Saudis will let women drive, and stop hacking the heads off of people in the town square.

Stupid barbarians.

Yup, and no one except Saudi women will be driving cars then, as the rest of us would have moved on to fancier stuff (read flying vehicles, teleporters, etc)
