About bloody time.
But can we please, please, please, please, please stop saying that he was "awarded" prison sentence?
As if it's a prize to be desired. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

I missed the last minute drama. Did he surrender in court and then dragged to Pune? Or was he allowed to directly surrender in Pune? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

He's been assigned kitchen duties at Yerwada, but he'll be getting food from home. |

How do these sentences work in the Indian judicial system?
Do they get reduced for good behavior or other mitigating circumstances? |

Not sure, and I don't think so. At least I've never heard of that.
On the other hand, I wish our justice system - now there's an oxymoron, as if there were anything systematic about it - also deserves to be awarded punishment.
No matter how guilty a person may be, if the system takes 20 years to arrive at a verdict, the accused should just be told to go home. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

Read somewhere that in India, well behaved convicts (whatever that means) are given permission to go home for short visits. The number of visits per year are limited, and they have to be applied for in advance. Of course, they are never granted to those who are considered high risk.
Sanjay Dutt has behaved well, apparently. And there's little chance that a celebrity like him will disappear. So he's been allowed to go. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

That's nothing unusual... It's just official sanction of what prisoners can arrange for themselves anyway.

So it's in accordance with the law. But that law is garbage. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

So first he got "leave" - like applying for a few days off from your job to go on holiday.
And now he's apparently asked for an extension of his "leave" that will likely be granted as a matter of course.
And he's supposedly imprisoned for treason in a maximum security central jail.
I'm baffled.
