Air India to lease 19 Airbus A-320 aircraft

Air India plans to lease 19 Airbus A-320 aircraft, which will be able to fly 180 passengers in an all-economy configuration.

The proposal to lease the aircraft, which will replace the same number of A-320 aircraft being phased out, was approved at the airline’s board meeting here on Tuesday.

The aircraft being phased out were acquired as part of an order placed by Indian Airlines in 1989; 14 of the A-320s being phased out are owned by Air India, while five are leased.

While the owned aircraft will be sold, the leased ones will be returned after the agreements lapse.

The induction of the leased capacity, which is expected to begin in the third quarter of this fiscal, will see an increase in seats being offered by the airline. Each of the aircraft being phased out offers seats ranging from 144 to 168.

The new aircraft will seat 180 passengers and help the airline fight competition from low-cost airlines that fly passengers in an all-economy class configuration.

They can probably get their hands on the impounded IT 320's (ex DN) which were already configured in all economy and use them i.e if these aircrafts are capable to fly after the scavenging done by IT.

I doubt those ex-IT aircraft are usable anymore. They're probably headed to the melting pot.

The airplanes will be leased form abroad, from the party which greases the palms the most.
Don't we all know it.

Wow, wow, wow - if they can indeed manage these, it will be superb, and the birds will do good business for Air India, on the routes with large-Y-negligible-J demand, which the elderly all-Y A320s are on, now.

Air India has been unable to lease 19 Airbus 320 aircraft, for which it put out a global tender last month, and may have to alter tender conditions before seeking quotations from lessors again.

A senior AI official confirmed to Firstpost that not a single lessor has come forward to lease brand new A320 aircraft, which the airline wanted to lease initially for six years.

“New aircraft means much less maintenance costs. But lessors probably do not agree with all of our lease conditions. We wanted brand new aircraft for six year lease and they would have progressively replaced the entire A320 family fleet. We will now hold discussions with lessors and put out another tender, perhaps with a longer lease tenure,” this official said.

I think the issue with the requirement for new A320s, otherwise there are probably a lot of 320s in the market. Even our own 6E seems to be returning an A320 for every other new one received.

To label AI's plans for their fleet as a merry-go-round is a bit of an understatement; they're well oiled giant wheels. How many stories have we heard about their grandiose plans for leasing out or selling VT-ALA/B/C, getting a few 320s for IX, all-Y 320 leases for the mainline, and whatnot.

Air India officials on Friday met aircraft leasing companies to rework the terms and conditions for leasing new aircraft, confirmed the official adding, “We are expecting to induct the new planes (on lease) to our fleet by the first quarter or (latest) the second quarter of the next fiscal.”

Among other things, the airline is said to be negotiating hard on the rentals of the new aircraft that it plans to induct in its fleet. It could also increase the lease tenure for the aircraft from the proposed six years before seeking a quotation from the lessors again.

AI is already facing aircraft shortage as it has embarked on an ambitious plan to replce 19 old Airbus 320 aircraft with new ones; lease on 5 other A 319 aircraft is expiring.
Air India has been unable to find new A320s and is being compelled to renew the lease of the A319s at higher lease rentals to overcome aircraft shortage.

Tender has been renewed, with the period amended to "period of maximum up to Twelve (12) years."

• Upto 07 aircraft required in Fourth Quarter of 2013/14.
• Upto 04 aircraft required in FY 2014/15.
• Upto 08 aircraft required in FY 2015/16.
However, earlier deliveries will also be considered

The tender is up again and has been modified :

Only 14 x A320s this time around (I guess the deal for the 5 above is solid).
No more " brand new with sharklets " A320s, but "Old (upto 6 years vintage)" airframes.

However the tender mentions :

 Air India additionally will shortly invite tender for dry lease of upto 14 new A320 Aircraft powered by CFM56-5B4/3 PIP Engines with Sharklets.
 Air India will require a total number of 14 A320 Aircraft on dry lease (old Aircraft as per the current tender and new Aircraft as per the tender to be floated).
 Air India reserves the right to select either old Aircraft or new Aircraft or a combination of both or reject fully or partly any bid submitted pursuant to this tender.

The tender for "Lease in of (14) NEW new A320 aircraft with sharklets powered by CFM56-5B4/3 PIP engines on dry lease, for a lease period of minimum 6 years with maximum up to Twelve (12) years" is up now.


Note:
 Air India has invited separate tender hosted on 24th April 2014 for dry lease of upto 14 Old A320 Aircraft (upto 6 years vintage) powered by CFM56-5B4/3 Engines with or without Sharklets.
 Air India will require a total number of 14 A320 Aircraft on dry lease (old Aircraft as per the tender already released,and new Aircraft as per the current tender).
 Air India reserves the right to select either old Aircraft or new Aircraft or a
combination of both or reject fully or partly any bid submitted pursuant to this tender.

By the way, I know this is a long shot - but if and when these 320s are leased, will they feature the new AI product as on their other 319s/320s/321s introduced post 2007? Will there be IFE and all the bling?

The evntual plan for AI is to use the 787 [they have plenty and more to come] on all SE Asian routes including BKK DXB etc..

The 321s and 319s with ife will take over metro sectors and metro to tier 1 cities while the all y aircraft will be used for tier 1 to tier 2 city connectivity as well as off peak hour flights

+1 to that.

DEL-SIN-DEL is already 787, heard DEL-BKK-DEL will also be changed to a 787 around June.

Highly unlikely that the leased A320s would have IFE. They're not even able to maintain the current IFE systems due parts shortage.

Air India is presently an A320 operator with an Airbus fleet of 60 A320 family aircraft – of which 43 units have an average age of less than 7 years and 14 units are more than 20 years old.

Air India is in a process of securing additional A320 aircraft for its short-term fleet requirement. We are planning to issue a new RFP in the next 3 (three) weeks. The RFP will be for a total of upto 14 units, which are mainly towards replacement of the existing old A320s in the fleet.

Air India would like to discuss the possibility of acquiring A320 NEO aircraft with the earliest possible delivery schedule. We would further like to discuss the possibility of looking at a mix of A320 CEO or A320 NEO to match our aircraft requirement with availability. Air India expects the first deliveries in 2015 and last deliveries in 2018. The A320 CEOAircraft should be CFMI powered while the engine choice for the A320 NEO fleet is open.

In order to fully understand the aircraft availability with the Lessors and to benefit from the Lessors’ flexibility to efficiently manage their A320 CEO/NEO order book, Air India kindly invites Lessors for a briefing meeting at the Air India Office anytime during the week of 24 November 2014, at Airlines House, 113, GurudwaraRakabganj Road, New Delhi and participate in the preliminary discussions prior to Air India issuing this tender for the 14 A320 CEO/NEO aircraft.

I am not sure about all economy international flights. Having at least 4 first class seats may be ok, especially for their premium member frequent flyer upgrades, full Y ticket purchasers and the occasional first class buyer. They have to have the discipline not to upgrade everyone - relatives/friends or govt officials.

Along with the new ATR 72 for the Alliance Air, I hear this all economy 320s are for Alliance Air as well. How true is this news?

National carrier Air India will phase out by next year six of its old, problematic Airbus A319s that have been in operations for about 30 years, replacing them with new Airbus A320neos (new engine option).

The decision was taken at a board meeting on December 11. The board also decided, in-principle, to prepare a road map for 14 more A320neo, for which it would negotiate seperately with Airbus, said a top Air India official.

The airline decided that three of these planes will be taken under a leaseback arrangement — the seller leases it back from the purchaser for the long term and continues to use it without actually owning it.

The decision comes after the airline’s failure to attract bidders last year, even as it issued a fresh global tender for the lease of 19 new A320s.

Since it is an aircraft built in Germany, it has a temporary German flag and registration. They will be removed prior to delivery.

All Airbus widebodies built in Toulouse similarly have a temporary French registration, and all Boeings have US ones.

I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

It's still a German aircraft.
Like The_Goat said, when it gets transferred to AI its registration and flag will change.
