Well done Sri Lanka! That was a great game. Got to feel for Virat Kohli.

I guess that if this doesn't show why Yuvraj Singh must be out of the team for good, nothing else can.

Stones being pelted now at Yuvraj's home, eh?

Typical from the sub-continent. Emotional as always.

We are like that only, no? Wink

At least only stones were thrown. In Pakistan, there have been times when the team bus and players' homes have had to be secured by Military Police after the team lost.

Or worse in Bangladesh, when the opposition's team buses are stoned in error.

Going by the England - Sri Lanka first test

http://www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-sri-lanka-2014/engine/match/667899.html

This match has seen three hundreds, one twin hundred and several fifties .

It looks like it will be a run fest for both sides when India tour England later.

The same thing happened last time in 2011 when Lanka toured prior to our tour; the series was won by England 1-0 (3 tests) and was a run fest overall. The only reason why they picked up the first affair at Cardiff was because Lanka mysteriously collapsed for double figures in under 45 minutes in the second session, when a draw was for the taking on Day 5 which was half washed out due to rain anyway.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/474463.html

Anyway, the whole thing was irrelevant on our result of course, we were whitewashed 4-zip regardless.

Just penned this on another forum regarding our tests in England looking at it from Lanka's victory's point of view:

You are right. Even at this pathetic stage, England seem better than India.

But hope springs eternal. I expect Bhuvi and Shami to take some quick wickets, and hopefully Pujara will fire along with Kohli to get us some draws, if not wins.

Even though this time India won't be playing against the likes of 3 best Englishmen of 2011 series namely, KP, Swann and Trott, still we will see England recover and win the series by 2-1 or so.

So the first day of the first test has gone in India's favour. So far so good.

Excellent stuff by Murali Vijay though. Who expected him, of all people, to come good?

http://www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-india-2014/engine/match/667711.html

I couldn't watch the game but a lot of stuff was being said about Alastair Cook's field placing. So his captaincy woes continue....

After that rather forgettable first test, India are in a hole in the second one. 128/6 post lunch, on the first day.

Comment on espncricinfo:" Dont worry. Bhuvi and Shami are yet to bat" Laughing

For the first time in the last 15 overseas test matches that we have seen Indian fast bowlers do the talking rather than the batsmen.

It is a good to see for a change India playing at its best through out these 2 test matches. Hope they will continue till they win the series.

Absolutely delighted with the Lord's result.

Prior to the series I thought it was only a matter of time before Cook/Bell and the rest where launched back into form by our bowlers but two tests on this hasn't been the case.

Good to see our batting standing up. Kohli failing is interesting, and I think Pujara is due for a big one sooner rather than later.

Can't wait for Sunday!

Two questions I have. Just two, no big deal.

1. Aren't India supposed to be 'experts' at playing spin?

2. Was it Moeen Ali or Murali in disguise?

Really, if Ashwin still doesn't play in Old Trafford, Dhoni should be declared persona non grata in India and have all his IPL earnings seized.

The answer to your questions are:

1. Yes. India are still considered experts of playing spin.

2. Moeen Ali made India look bad at spin during the 2nd innings of the 3rd test. Maybe its because he is new so Indian batsmen were either playing him over-aggressively or defensively. They have to soon figure out how to play against him like how they did against Ajantha Mendis. Mendis seemed to be unplayable but then Sehwag proved us wrong by playing a great innings against Sri Lanka in a test series.

and it is all these 'considerations' that are the problem.

Have you forgotten how our 'experts' were bamboozled by Panesar and Swann the last time England played in India - on pitches that were tailor made for our spinners?

and in other news, apparently Bhuvaneswar Kumar is injured and possibly won't be playing in Manchester. What a blow!

In any case, my line up for Old Trafford is

Vijay, Gambhir, Pujara, Rahane, Kohli, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Shami, Bhuvi/Varun Aaron, Pankaj Singh.

Old Trafford is traditionally a spinning wicket. Monty Panesar has excellent stats over there, so we should go with two spinners.

I'd give that poor bloke Pankaj Singh another chance. He wasn't bad, and but for that drop by Jadeja, would have got Cook out for 30 runs.

If Kumar isn't playing we don't stand a chance. Shami hasn't fired this series, and it's hard to place faith on Pankaj Singh and Varun Aaron.

Kohli and Pujara haven't fired all series either - worrying.

I hope the team haven't taken a back seat out of complacency of one test win, that's a rubbish attitude to have.

England are going to play Steve Finn in Manchester.

India have helped Cook and Bell find form. Now it will be Finn's turn to regain his lost magic by playing the Indians.

I don't even want to think about what is going to happen to India in Australia later this year.

Wonder who will be Career Terminator Mitch Johnson's Indian victim then. I'm betting it will be Dhoni.

Pujara hasn't looked quite the same since his 153 at Jo'burg.

I'm hoping Kohli will do a turnaround at some point. He did well in NZ earlier this year.

Kohli is a master at piling up the runs when the series is done and dusted, for all intents and purposes. Off the top of my head:

Maiden 100 at Adelaide - when we were trailing 0-3.
100 vs Eng in the home series - After we'd lost 1-2.
100 in NZ - After we'd lost 0-1 and McCullum had pounded 300+.

Only that ton in South Africa came when the series was alive.

He can't hide behind the fact that he's young and inexperienced anymore. He's one of the more senior lot in the current set-up - taking into account his ODI showings as well - and he has to deliver come the next test.

India's playing eleven is matching your desired team line-up, except that Shami is replaced by Varun Aaron. Good news that Bhuvi is playing.

Also it was a good toss for Dhoni to win and chose to bat first.

Currently, the scoreline looks awful with India being 11/4. Everything went according to plan for Dhoni in terms of having the correct team and batting first after winning the toss. Finn is also not playing this game.

But the execution from the top order batsmen remains to be on decline. Murali Vijay is not at his best with wickets becoming more bouncier and Anderson is at his best.

The decision to bat first is puzzling, to say the least.

Batting in moist conditions on a green top, particularly with bowlers like Anderson and Broad in the opposition, was always going to be challenging.

This decision is going to haunt MSD for a long time to come, should India lose this test.

In most of the test matches, a team that has won the toss have decided to bat first on this ground. Our top order batsmen have failed even on the flat wickets in the this series, except for Murali Vijay.

The main reason for batting first is that in the second innings, it will spin a lot and that is why India has gone with Ashwin. England will have to bat second. Still there is a long way to go in this test match. Whether Dhoni's decision to bat first was right or not will be known after England finishes its 1st innings. If their lead is less, than India would require to bat well in the second innings and set up a huge target.

It will be difficult for England to chase a huge target on a 4th and 5th day. The pitch will be helpful for Ashwin and Jadeja.

The whole Anderson-Jadeja fiasco has seem to distracted India more than England. Because after the Lord's defeat, England has played a better cricket than India.

Anderson has got Jadeja's scalp in this test as well.

And it's not like Jadeja is some awesome player, he doesn't even deserve to play test cricket IMO.

Leave him in the IPL and the occasional T20i.

All the attention given to Jadeja is all of media hype. Addressing him as 'Sir Ravinder Jadeja' is unwanted.

I feel he is a Over-Valued player even for IPL tournament.

The same with Cheteshwar Pujara. All the talk about him being the new Rahul Dravid is totally uncalled for. It is equally unfair to both the players.

In fact, it is a tendency with Indian cricket fans and the media to over rate an upcoming player, without taking into consideration whether the player has performed well in foreign conditions apart from the sub continent.

Even Kohli is being called India's next Sachin Tendulkar just because he has played some sensational one-day innings during chases and also believed to have a similar style of batting as 'The Little Master'. But he is yet to create such impact in overseas test series.
