Airbus has successfully completed the main structural assembly and system connection of A350 XWB ‘MSN-001’ – the first flight-test aircraft. The aircraft is depicted here on its wheels for the very first time moving out of the main assembly hall (Station 40) at the recently inaugurated “Roger Béteille” A350 XWB Final Assembly Line in Toulouse. It then entered the adjacent indoor ground test station (Station 30).

The assembly work performed in Station 40 included the successful electrical power-on of the aircraft's entire fuselage and wings. Soon work in Station 30 will start by testing the aircraft's hydraulic system, followed by the full electric and hydraulic power-on of the aircraft which will be completed by around the end of the year. This will mark the start of several weeks of comprehensive functional system testing.

After the A350 XWB MSN-001 exits station 30, the aircraft will go through a series of extensive production and certification / development tests, be painted and have its engines installed. It will then be delivered to the flight-line and be readied for its first flight in mid-2013.

Nice. Looks like what came out when a 787 and an A321 did it in the barn.


and the title of the article is misleading. It is far from 'flyable' , the way it is right now. Airbus's PR dept needs some English lessons!

I guess they mean that this is the first airframe that will be capable of flight in the future (hence the MSN-001).

Not that this aspect is of any operational consequence, but good heavens it's ugly. Weak, shapeless nose, A380-inspired cockpit windows, the works. Are the 747-8 and the remaining A330 variants the last genuinely elegant designs to emerge from the major manufacturers? The future is the 787, A350, NEO, MAX and BWB concepts that look 'cool' and 'futuristic' but not, IMHO, elegant or even majestic like the older designs Sad

On the other hand, perhaps somebody said the same thing when the 747 came out Smile I might yet get used to the plastic beauties.

A touch unfair on the A340-500 and -600. And the A350 looks rather good, in my opinion. It's stuff like the B757 and the A310 that fall under the 'ugly' category.

Of course, the A340 family is one of my favourites, though the hairdryer-equipped early varieties could be better. I was referring to aircraft still in production.

The A310 IMO, only looked ugly in AI's old Taj Mahal livery. Only the 747 looked good in that.

Personally, Thai's cool purple scheme does it for me (though on the 345). A close second - though not an actual, fully-fledged livery - would be Etihad's F1 bird.

In last place? The carrier from Germany.

I agree with both of you - the A345/A346 are very elegant aircraft. China Eastern tried valiantly to make it look ugly but failed. VS's new scheme is smashing, except for the Macy's-style billboard lettering that I'm not a great fan of - also, one wonders if it will age well. LH is uninspiring and bland, Iberia's is reasonably nice and South African's looks like a great design that was abandoned halfway (the tailfin is gorgeous).

I find that my grouse with the aesthetics of these new-fangled recent aircraft is the nose and the shape of the cockpit windows - the 787 and the A350 have a sort of dull, undefined nose that makes the fuselage side-on look like a right-angled trapezoid, like a bullet train. The windows on the A380 and A350 have the most appalling Comic Sans shapes.

I find that the best liveries on the A380 and 787 are those that obscure the nose in some way - think China Southern's A380 and Qatar's 787.

Dunno about the -1000 but the 787-10 sure does have a 6 wheel bogie.

It's a touch wider than the 787 if that helps.

And both designs came around within a couple of years of each other, and you can't really allege that one "copied" from the other.

It will look really good when she's painted up and flying, heck the 787 looked odd when we first saw it (come to think of it it looks a bit odd now coz its so small...)

More like the A300.

This isn't the completed aircraft. I think the wingtips are attached later.

Airbus have opted for the raked wingtips like the 777, so they are different from the other line of aircraft.

The first A350 XWB – MSN001 – now showing its completed wings, has moved to its next phase of ground testing, from Roger Béteille A350 XWB FAL “Station 30” to the Clément Ader area “Station 18” in Toulouse. The aircraft is structurally complete and shows the installed winglets, belly fairing panels, main landing gear doors.

The aircraft has recently completed successfully a series of indoor ground tests as well as stability tests on ‘movable’ elements such as rudder, elevators, ailerons and wing spoilers and landing gears extraction/retraction. The next steps which will take place outdoors at the Station 18 ground test station will include three planned families of tests: Fuel tanks testing – including levels, flows, sealing and internal fuel transfer functions; pressure testing of the fuselage; and radio equipment testing.

Airbus installs Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines and Honeywell APU on A350 XWB MSN001

Airbus has installed on the first flight-test A350 XWB (MSN001) its two flight-ready Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines and is also installing the new Honeywell HGT1700 auxiliary power unit (APU) at Airbus’ production facilities in Toulouse (France).

The new Trent engines were both received from UTC Aerospace Systems (formerly Goodrich) which had recently prepared the fully integrated powerplants prior to their installation on the aircraft’s pylons. Last month the Trent XWB received Engine Type Certification from EASA, confirming that the engine had fulfilled EASA’s airworthiness requirements for flight. The Trent XWB has already powered a series of test flights on Airbus’ A380 Flying Test Bed (FTB) aircraft since February 2012, demonstrating a high level of maturity.

In parallel to the mounting of the two Trent XWB engines in Toulouse, the A350 XWB is also this week being fitted with its new specially developed APU – the Honeywell HGT1700 which has greater power density and higher efficiency than the previous generation APUs.

With the installation of its engines and also the APU, the A350 XWB MSN001 becomes essentially a ‘completed’ aircraft. Following the ongoing ground tests, other preparations and also painting in the coming weeks, MSN001 will then be handed over to the Airbus Flight Test team to commence preparations for ground runs and maiden flight in the summer.

First A350 XWB painting completed in Toulouse

13 May 2013

Painting of the first A350 XWB “MSN001” was today fully completed as it emerged in its Airbus livery out from the paintshop in Toulouse. This latest milestone shows that MSN001 is progressing well on its route to first flight.

The aircraft painting was achieved in less than seven days and follows the recent completion of MSN001’s flight-test-instrumentation (FTI) verification. Last month the aircraft underwent its engines installation, and passed a subsequent intensive phase of ground vibration tests. MSN001 will soon start the final tests before its maiden flight this summer.

She seems to have a slightly different paint job on the other side of the fuselage, with "A350-900" titles.

Surprised to see the "eye-shades" and a 6 pane cockpit.

Otherwise, she's an absolute - I believe humdinger is the word I'm looking for. The Trents and the blended winglets are a sure hit.

The winglets sure look great. She looks beautiful but my favorite would always be the Queen of the skies.

Does the tail look a bit shorter in comparision to the overall body?

And whats with this newfound fascination with a nose-job? Airbus seem to trying to outdo everyone from Boeing to Embraer to Sukhoi on this..

Oh don't worry about that, some airlines are planning to cram 10-abreast Y seating into them in any case.


Some already do 9 abreast on A330 Y class Mad

Ah yes, but Air Asia X is the exception rather than the norm - their very existence proves so. The only other carrier that comes to mind is Thomas Cook, and they're a charter airline. The ex-Nov Air 332s that made their way to KU in 2006 (currently VT-IWA and IWB with AI) were also 9 a row in Y, but again, charter configuration.

Finally. After the 380 and 787- at least she has her proportions right!
Love the eyes Cool .... and the wings. I like all the sensors around her nose ... and her front bit Laughing She's just good looking!!
