A few years ago, I was part of a research team putting together a project on the history of Civil Aviation in India. I recently found some of the material I had managed to lay my hands on then - mostly scans from the now defunct 'Indian Airliner' magazine of Indian Airlines.

Over the next few weeks, I will be uploading some material from this cache, starting with these classic pics of AI/IC aircraft. Hope you like them

Excellent - love the old pic of the AI 747-200. Hopefully you can find some of the 707s too.

Here's one from my collection.

Wow - lovely. Thanks for sharing these lovely memories with us! What year did the SXR A300 flights start? I seem to remember being on an SXR-DEL flight running very high fever: was it in 1976 itself?
Cheers, Sumantra.

Very nice collection there. How long did IC use the DC3s? and where did they fly them to?

IC operated DC-3s right from its formation in 1953. While passenger services ceased sometime in the late 1960s, one aircraft continued operating as a freighter right up to the mid-1980s. This airplane was mainly used for government and internal IC cargo.

Where did they fly them to? Almost wherever they operated! The DC-3 was IC's workhorse during the 1950s and 1960s. Even after the Caravelle, Vickers Viscount and Fokker F27 were inducted, the DC-3 continued operating to smaller destinations. It was only just before the arrival of the 737 that it was removed from scheduled services.

The DC-3 was the backbone of Indian Civil Aviation during its formative years of the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. In fact, IC was formed in 1953 after merging the numerous smaller airlines that existed in India during the British rule, and most of these flew the DC-3. As a result, the merged entity had nearly 50 DC-3s, in additon to Herons, Skymasters and Doves. So actually, the saga of the DC-3 in Indian Civil Aviation goes back to the 1930s, right from the time the first DC-3s was made. Just like it did wherever it flew, the DC-3 served India too in an exemplary fashion.

Great Airplane!
