Hi all,
Normally the success of an airline depends on their Market strategy,service,air fare and the FFP.

Some of the other factors behind the success of an airline is the size and type of their fleet and their seat planning for the important routes.

So I would like to know from all the members,which airline according to you has the following elements:

1.) Ideal size of their fleet

2.) Best type of fleets suiting to their strategy and

3.) Best seat planning

Please select the options from the mentioned lists.Incase, if you choose an airline that is not mentioned in the list,please specify the name of the airline and your reason.

I risk getting laughed at for this, but Air India has got its long term fleet planning right , if nothing else.

AI's long haul fleet is getting standardized with the 777/787 combination, an excellent one if you ask me. The medium/short haul is also getting standardized with the A320/A319 family, yet again a very good decision. One has to admit that the choice of aircraft has been very good, all the kickbacks notwithstanding. Boeing and Airbus are both happy, and the cabin hardware in the new aircraft is also excellent.

They might buy some A330s which may complement the 777/787 fleet for the MLH routes. No harm in that too IMO.

Please note that I have only talked about fleet planning, not aircraft utilization or other issues where AI lags behind the rest in a big way. I also won't say that AI's is the best fleet planning in the world, so sorry for diverting from the topic Wink

I like the way CX has gone about expansion of their fleet, sure they could've done without the 77E's and A340's, but otherwise, their route wise fleet segregation is fantastic. 77W's, 744's and A333's.
Even KQ, for that matter, B73H, B73W, B763 and B77E and a few Saab's appear to be perfect for a market like NBO.

To me BA has the best fleet combination amongst the other carriers.If you look at theirs and compare it with SQ or CX,they have the best combinations for their Long-haul,short-haul and regional routes.

For their long-haul they have the best combination of B777W,B777-200,B744,B767 and the A380.

In Short-Haul for their flights to Europe and within British Isles,they have mixture of A320 family,B757s and B737s series.

For regional setors as well they have ERJs,BAE-146 systems avro RJ,EMB-170 etc.

I'am surprised that CX and SQ have not considered operating A320s or B737s for their direct flights within Asia till date. Instead of B777-200s,A330s,A340s and B77Ws,they could have opt for one of these as it would be cost effective interms of operations wise and fuel consumption.

EK also doesn't have any short-haul jets for their flights to ME and some parts of Asia but then they have nothing to worry interms of fuel cost as it is availabe in those region.

I think this opinion poll is quite vague.

Each airline has its own route requirements and configures its fleet accordingly.
There is no right or wrong about this at all. People have mentioned about EK & SQ not having narrowbody aircraft..Well, Silk Air is an SQ subsidiary right?
EK doesnt need narrowbody aircraft at this time..in fact, if you really want to go with the spirit of the poll, EK has a highly optimized fleet centered around the 777s. The wide variety of configurations give EK a huge number of options.

I think pre-merger Continental was also very well optimized, especially for the short period of time when they had 737/757/767/777 fleet (having rid of the MD80s and DC10s)

no doubt Singapore airlines has the best Emirates is not so bad also.As BA i cannot say anything.
