An incident of airport employees indulging in unlawful activities like smuggling and theft at the new Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport has been brought to light by the latest arrests made by the Customs department. While an airport employee was held for smuggling memory cards and textile articles worth Rs 33 lakh, another employee was held for helping him.

According to Commissioner of Customs Vinod Kumar Goel, the anti-smuggling team was working on an input that a member of one of the private agencies working at Terminal-3 was involved in surreptitious smuggling of high-value and electronic goods in small quantities. “After careful planning, a watch was mounted by officers of Customs Airport Shift and Preventive on some passengers for a while. On Thursday, a close watch was kept on a passenger named Narendra Singh right from the aerobridge, who arrived by Jet Airways Flight 9W 0071 from Hong Kong,” said Goel.

Officials said, according to intelligence officers, the designated place of delivery was to be a toilet in the Arrival Hall. After immigration, Singh went to a toilet and locked himself in the lavatory. As soon as he came out, another person, who was later identified as Sachin Kumar entered the same lavatory with a black zipper bag.

“After a while, he came out and started moving towards a lift in the Arrival Hall with the same bag. This lift opens in the Departure Hall at upper level. Here he was intercepted by the Customs officers. On sustained questioning he broke down and stated that he was doing this for quick money. From his zipper bag, 13 brown packets containing more than 20,000 memory cards of foreign origin were found,” said an official. Singh, meanwhile, was stopped by Customs officers while crossing the Green Channel. He identified the brown packets as the one he had brought from Hong Kong and dumped in the toilet dustbin. A few mobile phones and expensive suit lengths were recovered from his baggage. Singh and Kumar have been booked under the Customs Act, 1962, in a case of smuggling of goods worth Rs 33 lakh. They were produced before a Magistrate on Saturday.

While Singh works as a supervisor of a housekeeping agency at Terminal-3, Kumar, a supervisor with M/s UDS Pvt Ltd at Terminal-3, was assigned the duty of maintaining cleanliness in the food court on the departure side of the international airport. Singh had joined this company on September 1. He was earlier employed with the Home Guard.

“While Airport Customs has been busy with participants of the ongoing Commonwealth Games, it is alert enough to thwart any organised economic, security related crime at the Airport,” Additional Commissioner of Customs (Airport) Ashutosh Baranwal said.
