Iris scanner at Indonesian airport speeds travel for some
Jakarta, Dec 23(UNI)
Iris scanners at Indonesia’s main international airport will reduce the time travelers spend in immigration lines to just 10 seconds but only for those willing to pay the USD 200 yearly fee.
The ‘‘Saphire’’ programme, which kicked off this week and is not offered anywhere else in Asia, is for convenience not security, Angkasa Pura Schiphol, the Dutch-Indonesian joint venture which developed the system, said in a statement.
Business travellers and other frequent fliers taking part must first register with immigration authorities, pay the fee and have both eyes scanned.
Once enrolled they will no longer need to get immigration stamps when leaving or entering the country a process that often takes 30 to 40 minutes submitting instead to a quick eye scan.
Minister of Law and Human Rights Hamid Awaluddin, who launched the programme Thursday at Jakarta’s international airport, said the program will enhance the quality of service provided by Indonesian immigration officials and improve security.
The program, which is open to Indonesians and foreigners who comply with the company’s terms and conditions, will be implemented at major Indonesian airports, starting with Jakarta’s Sukarno-Hatta International Airport, the company’s president Djoko Santoso said.
The company also plans to install the system at airports in Surabaya, Medan and Bali, but he did not say when. |
